Employment Type: Full-time 12-month position
The Director of Special Education is responsible for planning coordinating implementing and evaluating special education programs across the school district in accordance with state and federal laws including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Section 504 and Arizona Department of Education (ADE) regulations. The Director provides leadership to ensure equitable access to quality services for all students with disabilities.
Develop implement and evaluate district-wide special education programs.
Ensure compliance with IDEA Section 504 ADA and Arizona laws.
Supervise and evaluate special education staff including coordinators psychologists therapists and related service providers.
Collaborate with district administrators to align special education services with general education curriculum and instruction.
Ensure all IEPs and 504 plans are compliant and implemented with fidelity.
Serve as the districts liaison for due process hearings mediation and state complaints.
Maintain accurate student records and submit required reports to the ADE and federal agencies.
Develop and oversee the special education budget including federal and state grant funds (IDEA Medicaid etc.).
Ensure equitable distribution of personnel and materials across school sites.
Plan and provide ongoing professional development for special education and general education staff.
Support principals and site staff with implementation of inclusive practices and interventions.
Stay updated on current best practices legislation and research related to special education.
Act as a point of contact for parents of students with disabilities.
Ensure transparency open communication and support for families.
Partner with community agencies and organizations to support student needs.
Valid Arizona Administrative Certificate with a Special Education endorsement or eligibility.
Masters degree in Special Education Educational Leadership or related field.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in special education with at least 1 years in a leadership role.
Knowledge of IDEA Arizona special education statutes and best practices in inclusive education.
Experience in an urban or diverse school district.
Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Office and school site environments.
Frequent travel between schools within the district.
Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities for meetings and events.
