Job Description

Job Title: Crossing Guard Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Job Role: (None) Funding Source: Local

Pay Grade: OS 1

Department/School: Campus Assigned

Function: Educational Support

Reports to: Campus Principal HR Date Approved: January 2009

HR Date Revised: June 2024

SUMMARY:

Works under minimal supervision to assist children and others to safely cross the street at assigned intersections during designated hours.

  • Model KISD core organizational beliefs and values; perform duties effectively and efficiently for the purpose of supporting and contributing to high student achievement.
  • Provide program support and service delivery; communicate effectively within and across teams and participate in cross-functional work groups.
  • Maintain a commitment to the District mission; model District expectations through personal leadership and actively support the efforts of others to achieve District goals.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Student Safety

  • Assist students and parents in crossing the street safely.
  • Report any areas of concern to the campus principal.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Utilize effective communication skills; ensure that all interactions are supportive courteous and respectful.

Policy and Law

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Comply with all policies operating procedures legal requirements and verbal and written directives.
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)

Experience:

  • Experience working with children (preferred)

SPECIAL KNOWLEGDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of pedestrian safety rules and vehicular laws
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to read understand and follow written instructions
  • Ability to identify and respond quickly to traffic safety hazards

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • None

MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used:

  • Hand-held traffic signs traffic cones reflective safety attire

Posture:

  • Prolonged standing

Motion:

  • Constant walking grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension reaching

Lifting:

  • Light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment:

  • Work to be completed on-site from assigned school or building
  • Work outside (exposure to sun heat cold humidity and inclement weather)
  • Constant exposure to noise and vehicle exhaust; work around moving vehicles and on slippery and uneven surface
  • No remote work

Mental Demands:

  • Maintain emotional control under pressure; work with frequent interruption; may work alone
