BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The current prevalence of malnutrition in children is alarming. Over 42 million children suffer from acute malnutrition and over 149 million suffer from stunting. Maternal and child undernutrition is the underlying cause of approximately 45% of all mortality in children under 5. Not only does undernutrition levels remain stubbornly high but numbers of overweight persons are growing exponentially even in poor countries. Conflict and natural disasters are exacerbating the problem.

As the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger and malnutrition the World Food Programme (WFP) is adapting to meet the current and emerging global nutrition challenges. This includes enhancing organizational capacity to reach vulnerable populations affected by acute malnutrition as well as expanding our portfolio to find lasting solutions for populations affected by poor diets and chronic malnutrition.

In 2024 WFP developed a new Nutrition Strategy. Its accompanying socialization fundraising advocacy and communications plans are ongoing in 2025-2026. Furthermore the Nutrition Outreach and Advocacy (NOA) team has three main priorities forwith specific advocacy communications and fundraising plans for each: Child wasting (particularly the newly launched Joint Action to Stop Wasting partnership with UNICEF) Local Food Solutions and Nutrition Integration. Additionally effective communication through corporate channels on WFPs work in nutrition is a priority given needs and a shrinking fiscal space.

The Nutrition Advocacy and Design Consultant will play a key role in producing multimedia assets to support the Nutrition Strategy socialization fundraising advocacy and communications as well as in advance of the three NOA priorities. The Consultant will develop a portfolio of high quality and visually appealing materials to increase WFPs nutrition outreach targeting key audiences including donors partners government and beneficiaries and WFPs senior management and decision makers.

Under the terms set out below the consultant will work in the Nutrition Outreach and Advocacy team under the supervision of the Communications Advisor while working very closely with the Nutrition and Food Quality Services functional teams.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support advocacy fundraising and outreach efforts through timely preparation and distribution of visual products for both printing and electronic distribution including reports factsheets infographics posters flyers invitations banners icons greeting cards videos and presentations for wide internal and external audiences. Create multimedia assets to support campaigns and events.

3. Support the development and implementation of global and region- specific nutrition advocacy/communications and resource mobilization workplans.

4. Increase capacities of WFP nutrition staff at HQ ROs and COs on aspects of visual communication provide advice and guidance within area and level of expertise to ensure that all products meet the desired standards of consistency quality and impact.

5. Further the visibility of the Nutrition and Food Quality Service through training and template materials to be used consistently with the goal of raising the Nutrition and Food Quality Services recognition.

6. Develop and manage donor specific visibility content including photos videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms ensuring consistency with corporate messages.

7. Support the work of the Nutrition technical teams as needed for the development of high-quality communication visual materials.

8. Work closely with relevant COM colleagues to support corporate communication efforts on nutrition.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

1. Effective communication products and assets developed in support of the three NOA priority areas and the Nutrition Strategy socialization and outreach.

2. Communication products to support broader objectives of the Nutrition and Food Quality Service including PowerPoints briefs social media assets and publications.

3. Update of nutrition visuals icons templates and for use by nutrition colleagues worldwide and to enhance communications capacity across the Nutrition and Food Quality Service.

4. Continuous Internal and external nutrition portals up to date including website Trello board and so forth.

5. Designs and visuals for nutrition events and meetings.

6. Develop a portfolio of strong and effective nutrition advocacy products.

7. Ensure that all nutrition products and publications adhere to the WFP branding guidelines and the nutrition visual identity.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced University degree in graphic design media and communications fine arts or relevant field or a First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

Experience:

At least 5 years of postgraduate progressively responsible professional experience

in graphic design and communications.

Experience in video editing photography and photo editing - required.

Experience in illustration - desirable.

Experience in social media and web-content/design - required.

Experience in working in nutrition desirable

Experience of AI tools for design and image generation - desirable

Experience working in WFP - required.

Knowledge & Skills:

Excellent digital and video skills - Adobe Creative suite Microsoft Office Vyond

Ability to conceptualize and develop e-learning modules interactive learning

materials and surveys using tools such as Articulate Storyline 360

Strong understanding of WFP branding guidelines and WFPs Strategic Objectives

Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms

Ability to plan and organize work and communicate effectively

Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in multicultural setting

Well organized and detail oriented

Ability to handle a large volume of work and to meet strict deadlines with minimal

supervision

Creative attitude that aspires to perfect innovative design of presentations

websites and other communications material

Experience in researching and developing high quality graphics

Ability to understand audience behavior and present visual information in an

appealing way to its specific type

Excellent written and oral communication skills required

Public speaking knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and awareness of accessibility standards

Languages:

Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language - desirable.
