Job Description

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties supporting approximately 12000 students in 38 schools.

Autism Teacher Specialist/Coach

Job Description and Qualifications

Autism Teacher Specialists are experienced and skilled teachers who provide direct collaborative support to teachers and students. The specialists work with classroom teachers to support the development and implementation of strategies and programming to promote students well-being and achievement.

Overall Scope

The Autism Teacher Specialist is responsible for providing support to students diagnosed withAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within the provincial Regional Centres of Education and CSAP. The Autism Teacher Specialist will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students with ASD. The Autism specialist teacher will align programming and support with a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework and utilize best practices to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder at Tier 1 2 and 3.

This person will report to the Autism Consultant and the Student Service Coordinator aligned with the established Student Services framework of support within the RCE/CSAP.

This position could be assigned to do intensive periods of time at multiple schools in a year. This determination would depend on the needs of the students and the school(s).
