Job Description

Position Summary
The Learning and Development Manager is responsible for the training development and continued success of new and existing staff across the organization. This role assesses the Get It Want It Capacity components of EOS and understands the people mapping structure while supporting the 1 year 3 year and 10-year strategy. This essential role is key to maintaining high standards of care in a rapidly evolving animal welfare and veterinary landscape.

The L&D Manager develops and delivers strategic training initiatives ensures compliance with best practices in shelter and clinic medicine and collaborates closely with the Veterinary team Animal Services Human Resources and organizational leadership. This individual will lead onboarding and professional development efforts that promote a culture of compassion collaboration and continuous learning.

Key Responsibilities

Training and Onboarding

  • Coordinates and supervises training for all operational support staff (technicians assistants animal services and clinic support).
  • Writes and implements lesson plans delivers lectures and conducts skills-based instruction.
  • Demonstrates and trains veterinary and animal services skills terminology and procedures.
  • Creates and executes onboarding plans for new hires and performance-based training objectives for staff.
  • Tracks evaluates and documents training progress; provides feedback and guidance.
  • Coordinates monthly and quarterly meetings with staff members and supervisors leading leadership development efforts including coaching team-building workshops and supervisor training.
  • Partners with veterinarians supervisors and management to create update and implement SOPs.
  • Ensures staff is up to date on current trends and techniques in animal services and clinic medicine leveraging outside resources and continuing education as needed.
  • Creates and maintains structured training checklists schedules and performance metrics.

Organizational Learning & Development

  • Develops and executes an organization-wide learning strategy aligned with mission goals.
  • Designs and delivers training across departments (animal care adoptions admin customer service veterinary services etc.).
  • Manages the Learning Management System (LMS) including content development and reporting.
  • Leads efforts in leadership development coaching and management training.
  • Champions diversity equity inclusion and belonging through intentional training strategies.
  • Partners with department leads to ensure that job responsibilities are clearly defined and aligned with team and organizational outcomes.
  • Understands each role and their 3-5 key responsibilities within the organization and how they intersect to design clear and scalable career development pathways that support employee growth succession planning and long-term retention.
  • Provides a role-by-role analysis of organizational needs and employee capabilities working closely with supervisors managers and directors to deliver objective assessments around accountability performance expectations and role clarity.
  • Regularly evaluates training effectiveness and adapts programs based on feedback and measurable outcomes.

  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff and leadership.
  • Applies strategic thinking to organizational and business perspectives to identify and focus on key performance indicators drivers of organizational performance and results that are scalable/measurable.
Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in the veterinary field (clinic or shelter environment).
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification is a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience in training mentoring or staff development.
  • Strong organizational communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in time management problem solving and multitasking.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse teams.
  • Proficient in learning technology tools (e.g. LMS Microsoft Office Google Workspace).
  • Must have three years management or supervisory experience
  • Associates degree preferred; High School Diploma/GED required

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Must be able to walk stand or remain mobile for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend twist reach; perform strenuous physical activities.
  • Must be able to safely restrain and work with animals of various species and temperaments.
  • Work may include exposure to animals cleaning agents noise and odors typical of a shelter/clinic setting.
  • You should not be allergic to animals or nut products and must be able to work around all animals; you may be potentially subject to animal and insect bites and scratches.
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants as we have a very strict cleaning protocol.
