Job Summary:The High Performance Computing Systems Administrator IV works in the Office of Information Technologys research computing team assisting with daily operations of high performance computing (HPC) clusters and other research services and resources. Supports computational sciences engineering artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and other research fields. Manages and leads a team of five to six HPC Systems Administrator or HPC Storage Administrators of varying levels. Builds optimizes and maintains the integrity of supercomputing and other research systems. Installs new cluster nodes switches and optics. Installs and maintains HPC software tools and user accounts. Assists faculty and students with HPC use.
Additional Department Summary:HPC resources and services are located within the UA HPC Center located on campus and UA HPCs colocation data center located in Birmingham Alabama. This job includes occasional hands-on cluster tasks requiring travel to UAs HPC colocation data center located in Birmingham Alabama.
Required Minimum Qualifications:Masters degree and four (4) years of high performance or Linux computing experience; OR bachelors degree and six (6) years of high performance or Linux computing experience; OR associates degree and eight (8) years of IT experience to include six (6) years of high performance or Linux computing experience; OR High school diploma or GED and ten (10) years of IT experience to include six (6) years of high performance or Linux computing experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:Must have valid U.S. drivers license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge:Expertise in one or more areas of high-performance systems such as storage (parallel file systems/AI I/O platforms) user environments software hardware or interconnects. Team performance skills. Service mindset approach. Ability to act as a trusted advisor. Self-motivated. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:Eight (8) years of experience with HPC platform management including remote management scalable platform management configuration management system software deployment infrastructure source code version control and/or telemetry.
Research computing facilitation experience (genomics computational chemistry mathematics data simulation/visualization AI/ML etc.).
Six (6) years of experience supporting a research computing technology such as hardware (HPC nodes GPU workstations etc.) virtual servers (VMWare etc.) research software (MATLAB GIS TensorFlow etc.) scripting (Python etc.) storage platforms high-speed interconnects or user environments.
Eight (8) years of advanced Windows or Linux systems administration experience. Some Bash Perl Python or similar scripting language experience.
Some C C or Fortran language experience.
