The Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has helped at-risk young adults develop themselves since 1987. To date more than 10000 young people have participated in CCLB classes and service projects learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for residents of the greater Long Beach area.
Mission The primary mission of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach is to develop at-risk youth to reach their full potential through work service conservation and education.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Restoration Manager the Restoration Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day direction and training of a crew of 2-14 young adults aged 18-26 years in a variety of work and educational activities. The Restoration Supervisor will assist the Restoration Manager in the oversight and coordination of restoration and sensitive habitat projects.
Essential Responsibilities:
Corpsmember Supervision:
- Supervise direct and coordinate new corpsmember orientation
- Lead or facilitate job training
- Maintain discipline positive crew moral build teamwork and cooperation among crewmembers and ensure that the rules and regulations of the CCLB are upheld
- Maintain corpsmember management report
Restoration Operations:
- Working under the Restoration Manager the Supervisor will assist in the Restoration Department to ensure safety quality and implementation of restoration projects.
Work Project Implementation:
- Supervise crews in the completion of conservation and restoration projects which may include invasive vegetation removal tree planting tree falling and bucking fuels reduction wildfire restoration fencing litter abatement historical preservation trail and park development and maintenance.
- Responsible for safe work practices proper use of and maintenance of tools vehicles and equipment.
- Assist with the responsibility of corpsmember weekly schedule
- Responsible for quality control of work
- Assist with acquiring materials and equipment for restoration projects
Training and Instruction:
- Conduct corpsmember training and instructional presentations or workshops in such areas as chainsaw operation and maintenance First Aid/CPR safety driver training tool safety environmental education or other areas related to project work or program goals.
- Teach corps skills encourage the development of good work habits conservation practices and teamwork.
- Crewleader ACL Chainsaw S-212 and driver training.
- Inaugurates and maintains an accident prevention program for all restoration projects
Reporting Procedures:
- Keeps technical records of projects; maintains both written and photographic logs.
- Prepare corpsmember evaluations incident reports and documentation of crewmember attendance participation and work hours.
- Conduct regular crew and individual restoration meetings to discuss corpsmember progress.
- Counsel motivate and discipline individual corpsmembers as appropriate.
- Participate in staff and corpsmember meetings.
- Assist the Restoration Manager with preparation of project reports by way of uploading statistical information and work project photos.
Chainsaw Specialist:
- Supervise and assist Restoration Manager in managing fuels reduction projects
- S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification
- Assist Restoration Manager conduct chainsaw trainings
- Maintain and repair chainsaws; cleaning oiling greasing and sharpening equipment properly
- Fell standing trees buck and limb fallen trees slash cut brush
- Select trees to be removed while assessing potential hazards such as site location terrain and weather conditions
- Using knowledge of tree characteristics and cutting techniques to control the direction of a trees fall with the least environmental impact
- Work as a member of a team rotating between chainsaw operation and swamping
- Ensure safety at worksites by checking all corpsmembers and staff are wearing appropriate PPE
- Removal of fallen trees and brush and transportation to appropriate location of disposal
Driving/ Vehicle Inspection:
- The Restoration Supervisor position requires a Valid California Drivers License and a clean drivers record.
- Ability to competently prevent and report vehicle issues through proper inspection and reporting.
Reporting Procedures:
- Prepare oral and written reports of purchases maintenance schedules expenses corpsmember evaluations incident reports and documentation of corpsmember attendance participation and work hours.
- Assist Restoration Manager with monthly project reports.
- Counsel motivate and discipline individual corpsmembers as appropriate.
- Participate in staff and corpsmember meetings.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Knowledge of principles of safety use of hand and power tools
- Knowledge of methods of group instruction and motivation
- Ability to properly discipline corpsmembers keep records prepare reports and communicate effectively with young adults under the supervision of a supervisor
- Class C Drivers License
- Three years or more of experience in working with young adults from a diverse social and ethnic background.
- Minimum of one year experience operating chainsaws in a safe manner
- Must understand proper techniques in felling and bucking trees
- Maintaining a safe work environment
- Hiking into remote sites with a heavy pack and equipment
- Knowledge of native and invasive plants of Southern California; must be able to identify species in the field
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Some college or special training in vocational or trade skills
- Corps experience of one year or more at CCLB or similar organization.
- Two or more years of experience in fuels reduction and wildfire restoration
- Experience with native habitat restoration in Southern California
- Experience utilizing GPS/GIS technology to navigate sites and collect data
- Knowledge of or background in natural resources and ecology
- Wilderness First Aid/CPR training and Commercial Pesticide Applicators License
- Class C Drivers License with Endorsement or Class B Drivers License
Other Duties and Requirements:
- Must be able to perform physical exercises heavy lifting and manual labor.
- DMV print-out Class C Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement (effective July 2017) or Class B Drivers license (or able to obtain within 30 days of employment) and First Aid/CPR certification is required as a condition of employment (or within 30 days of employment).

Salary and Benefits:- $19.68-$28.72 per hour (Salary Grade 111315) (reflects the entire 3 pay ranges) based on a level of experience and education that exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale (salary range).
