Exceptional Childrens School Personal Care Assistant

Reports to: Assigned Exceptional Childrens Teacher and School Principal
Purpose: To provide individual assistance that allows a student to receive support in school with access to the curriculum and educational environment.
Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertionof up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Personal Care Assistants are assigned/reassigned to school locations by Exceptional Children Services based on individual student needs.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Establish positive relationships with students while maintaining acceptable relationships with parents/guardians of students and school personnel
- Assist in the implementation of personal care and assistance with the daily instructional program as needed.
- Monitor student behavior and help maintain discipline in the classroom; assist with crisis prevention; assist with de-escalation techniques with students as needed.
- Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
- Feeds students when necessary; develop and follow toileting/diapering schedule for Intensive Needs students; assists with other tasks student are not able to perform for themselves
- Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification PT OT under the direction of professionals; prepares students for therapy and other special classes; monitors special diets.
- Assist students with mobility needs such as lifting and positioning students lifting in and of wheelchairs loading on/off the bus transporting students in and around the school and on field trips**
- Assists with the delivery of special services for students in need of functional life skills; assists with daily living skills (includes but is not limited to tube feeding catheterization toileting changing diapers use of other adapted equipment; and other necessary and appropriate medical procedures under the training and supervision of the school nurse).
- Obtains and maintains basic First Aid and CPR certification; monitors the administration of medication
- Performs various clerical duties as needed and maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports;
- Lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibilities or with patient lift equipment
- Maintain the same high level of confidentiality of information about students as is expected of teachers.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Perform under stress; deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
- Participate in staff development activities as directed by the Department for Exceptional Children.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the teacher principal or District EC Staff
Minimum Requirements
- Two year college degree preferred or 48-college semester credit hours (at minimum) required.
- Experience working with young people with Multiple Disabilities on the Autism Spectrum and CNA license preferred.
Terms of Employment:
Only reports on student days. Does not work on Optional/Mandatory Workdays; and Inclement Weather Days.
If reporting on a 1 or 2 hour delay only paid when students in attendance and work only until 11:30 pm on Early Release Days.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Grade: NC04 ($2600-$4294 per month based on trainingexperience and certifications AS WELL AS HOURS WORKED PER WEEK/MONTH)
