Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Public Works - Water & Wastewater

Regular Full-Time

Hourly Rate: $38.12 - $39.96 (Plus an additional $5.00 hourly premium)

CUPE LOCAL 966

Work mode: Onsite

Location: 230 Advance Blvd Brampton

Hours of work:40 hours per week (4-day flexible work schedule currently in effect)

Shiftwork will be required during winter months. Stand-by rotation and overtime opportunities.

In this role you will:

Under general supervision of the Foreperson you will be responsible for monitoring operating and maintaining municipal water treatment water distribution re-chlorination water storage and water pumping facilities and stations.

  • Monitor process chemical inventories process equipment performance; performperiodic preventative or unscheduled corrective maintenance to ensure properoperations.
  • Required to enter confined spaces to inspect condition of equipment or to performmaintenance.
  • Maintain buildings and grounds and exercise emergency standby power generators.
  • Monitor and evaluate water or wastewater treatment and wastewater collectionprocess performance and make all necessary adjustments to maintain continuouscompliance with Approvals and regulations under the Sate Drinking Water Act andthe regulations under the Ontario Water Resources Act and Nutrient ManagementAct.
  • Immediately report any Permit to Take Water or C of A exceedances to theWater or Wastewater ORO Foreperson Compliance Specialist and/or Supervisor.
  • Is accountable for all tools instrumentation equipment and vehicles as assigned.
  • Perform daily circle check of assigned vehicles. Alerts Supervisor of problems anddamages as incurredprocedures including detailed technical information required by outside contractors totroubleshoot and resolve major operating problems.
  • Perform water and/or wastewater quality testing including collection of water andwastewater samples in accordance with Region of Peel and/or regulatory standards.
  • Participate and assist with annual Ministry of the Environment facility inspectionsand regular Drinking Water Quality Management System (DWQMS) internal andexternal audits including answering technical questions regarding operationalprocedures and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Immediately reports regulatory compliance issues according to Region of Peelcommunication protocols and/or policies.
  • Report health and safety hazards. Apply safety precautions and procedures inconnection with duties performed as required by WHMIS Ministry of Transportation Ministry of the Environment regulations Transportation of Dangerous Goods andOccupational Health and Safety Act (Ministry of Labour); following Regionalpolicies and procedures including the use of safety equipment and attire.
  • Execute duties in a tactful and courteous manner. Maintain neat appearance andperforms duties in a way which conveys a positive image of the Region.
  • Regularlyresponds to customer complaints and immediately troubleshoots and resolvesconcerns.
  • Provide general information on water and wastewater services to promotetrust and confidence with the public.
  • Is required to take part in stand-by rotation.
  • Act as the Operator-In-Charge (OIC) as designated by the Overall Responsible Operator (ORO)
  • Regularly required to provide direction to other employees or act as team leader by ensuring quality and service standards and regulatory compliance requirements are met by providing guidance and training.

What the role requires:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Minimum MOE certification Wastewater Collection Class 1 and Wastewater Treatment Class 1.
  • Minimum 2 years of industry related work experience.
  • Possess a Class G license in good standing (DZ preferred)
  • Solid understanding of all relevant legislation including the Safe Drinking Water Act and Ontario Water Resources Act.
  • Understanding of emergency standby power systems and handling hazardous process chemicals.
  • Polished knowledge of municipal water pumping hydraulics including water pressure management and the maintenance of drinking water quality in water storage facilities and the water distribution system.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent mentoring coaching and training skills.
