Job Description

Under direction the Senior Electrical Inspector is responsible for planning assigning and supervising the work of professional Electrical Inspectors responsible for the enforcement of codes laws and ordinances covering the installation construction and maintenance of electrical systems.

The essential functions of this position include:

  1. Supervises staff responsible for electrical code enforcement and inspection activities; monitors work flow ensure timely inspection response; provides technical support review timekeeping records.
  2. Regulates inspection schedule prioritizes subordinates work assignments.
  3. Conducts employee performance appraisals.
  4. Conducts disciplinary issues.
  5. Conducts site visits monitors reviews construction plans and inspections performed by subordinate staff to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  6. Perform inspections of electrical system installation workmanship and materials for compliance with electrical codes and standards as necessary.
  7. Provides training on inspection and departmental procedures including work safety to ensure accuracy and timeliness of inspections documentation and reports.
  8. Communicates directly with project sponsors permit expeditors design processionals contractors and the general public to provide assistance and consultation to resolve conflicts related to field inspection activities.
  9. Prepares and issues written correspondence memorandums and reports.
  10. Testifies in court litigation relative to Electrical and Life Safety code violations.
  11. Implements explains and interprets information codes regulations ordinances and department policies and procedures governing electrical installation in the City and County of San Francisco.
  12. Performs analysis and research to develop code interpretation.
  13. Drives a vehicle to job sites meetings hearings emergency activities and other related events.
  14. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Experience: Three (3) years of verifiable experience within the past eight (8) years as a journey-level Electrical Inspector in a public jurisdiction responsible for independently inspecting electrical installations and enforcing electrical codes at a level equivalent to class 6248 Electrical Inspector with the City and County of San Francisco; AND
  2. Experience: Three (3) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level electrician; AND
  3. License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver License; AND
  4. Certification: Possession and maintenance of one of the following certifications:
    1. International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Electrical Inspector; OR
    2. International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI)s National Certification Program Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) program Electrical General (2B).

Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Experience working with 400 MHz electrical systems.
  • Experience in writing inspection reports to be presented to Executive Leadership.
  • Experience fostering effective working relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience working with multi-million dollar construction projects.
  • Experience providing training in electrical codes ordinances and regulations.
  • Experience in coordinating work with other construction trades.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel Teams PowerPoint)

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedure: 
After application submission candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process.

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements.  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.  Depending on the number of applicants the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates.  If this becomes necessary only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check including FBI fingerprints and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1 every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination.  Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance:
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.  An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced.  Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1 every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination.  Failure to acquire or maintain customs access a requirement for this position may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 19 Part 122 Sections 181 or 189.

Medical Examination:
Prior to appointment candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine their ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.
