0.429 FTE School Based Counsellor
Eagle River Secondary
This is a continuing assignment effective September 1 2025.
School counsellors consult and plan collaboratively with students other educators the School Based Team parents community agency personnel and other professionals in planning goals and effective strategies to promote the mental health and well-being of students. Consultation and direct services may focus on the students individual needs or on the school district or community programs providing mental health support.
Qualifications:
- A Masters degree recognized by the College of Teachers in counselling psychology or a related discipline with a focus in counselling.
- Valid BC Teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.
- Membership in a counselling or related professional association is preferred.
Teacher counsellors applying for this position should possess the following attributes:
- Demonstrated success as a schoolteacher and as a counsellor with the ability to provide therapeutic support within the limitations of a school environment.
- Ability to abide by ethical principles and act with integrity accountability and judgment in the best interests of the child/youth families and available services.
- In-depth knowledge of the psychosocial development of children and youth.
- Knowledge of best practices for supporting child/youth mental health as it intersects with substance use care cultural diversity gender diversity neuro-diversity and behaviour support needs.
- Demonstrated cultural agility to work respectfully knowledgeably and effectively with Indigenous peoples with an understanding of Indigenous worldviews and approaches to healing.
- Knowledge of social determinants of health health inequalitiesand intersectional analyses.
- Trauma sensitive practices; and an ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion when sharing sensitive information to individuals on a need-to-know basis.
- Ability to respond to critical incidents and student safety issues.
- Experience in providing a continuum of preventative developmental remedial and intervention services and programs to support student mental health.
- Comfortable working with at-risk students their families and interagency professionals.
- Training and experience in suicide risk intervention support and prevention.
- Experience in the facilitation of referrals to community services.
- Demonstrated ability provide collaborative leadership with child/youth teachers families administrators and community agencies as part of student(s) wrap around support.
- Ability to team with teachers to adapt and support curriculum and coordinate services for students with mental health or behaviour support needs.
- Ability to work within the School Based Team to plan and coordinate student supports.
- Demonstrated experience in case management referrals and transition processes.
- Demonstrated ability in developing and assessing the required IEPs for students with diverse needs who have challenges specifically with mental health or behaviour support needs.
- Current knowledge of Ministry of Education Special Education category requirements.
- Highly effective organizational skills and proven ability to prioritize work while simultaneously meeting the needs of a diverse caseload.
