Are you passionate about empowering refugees and immigrants to achieve financial independence and stability Do you want to make a meaningful impact in a diverse multicultural community CAPI a leading nonprofit organization is looking for a dedicated Farmers Market Part-time Coordinator to join our Community Advocacy team.

CAPIs mission is to guide refugees and immigrants in their journey toward self-determination. Key organizational values are rooted in equity inclusion and accessibility. Today we are an inclusive multi-lingual and immigrant-led nonprofit serving new refugees and immigrants including Minnesotas Asian East and West African and Latinx communities as well as underserved US born communities. Over 10000 individuals are served annually across four core service areas of Community Advocacy Refugee Services Economic Empowerment and Civic Engagement.

The responsibility of this position is the overall coordination and operation of the Brooklyn Center Farmers Market. This primarily means recurring operation of the Thursdays Farmers Market through communication with vendors onsite supervision of the market financial tracking of daily funds and connecting with participants to build rapport and relationship. As a part of the Community Advocacy Department this role is highly relational and focuses on connecting with those utilizing the program building rapport with them and getting a deep understanding of their unique life situation to better direct them to support. Importantly this role will operate as a strong source of connection to the community elevating their stories and voices to inform both programmatic approach within CAPI and policy initiatives outside of.

8 hours weekly Thursdays with a $30 hourly wage

To perform this job successfully you must be able to carry out each essential job function satisfactorily.

Essential Job Functions

Communication with FM vendors* 10

  • Active communication with vendors and outreach
  • Communicate Snap/EBT BC Farmers market tokens educate system to vendors as needed
  • Assist vendors as they arrive: Direct to stalls traffic control assisting with stall set up as needed confirmation of vendors in attendance
  • Move around the market and build a repertoire with vendors understand goods they are selling document any and all feedback
  • Provide a welcoming safe and supportive environment for vendors and community members in a professional and friendly manner
  • Other tasks as needed to support the market

Financial Tracking 10%

  • Accurately and timely utilizes financial tracking management system technology wise and physical paper
  • Engage in weekly/biweekly meetings with Basic Needs Manager optionally -Volunteer & Event manager
  • Track financial funds closely to ensure it balances out EOD
  • Communicate with Director of Finance and Operations for refill of cash on hand
  • Manage SNAP/benefits transactions ensuring compliance processing SNAP payments and distributing tokens to the public confirming vendors tokens and paying out vendors at EOD

Operation of farmers market/Onsite Coordination * 80%

Ensure CAPI complies with policies by City of Brooklyn Center

  • Physically carry and situate canopy tents tables and other equipment.
  • Work with CAPIs Volunteer Coordinator staff members to help onboard and find volunteers and interns for the food shelf and fresh produce Fridays.
  • Prior to arrival: Confirm this weeks vendors confirm weather confirm CAPI staff load needed materials into van fill sink pre-cash counting charge devices
  • Daily set up of market: Boundary cones signage CAPI/Market Booth Sink Trashes Visuals Posting required materials/signage verify tech working
  • Coordinate outreach vendors to booths
  • Booth Work: Provide petty cash exchanges with customers provide knowledge of CAPI and market guide on available benefits at market share what is available at market work with CAPI staff to inform CAPIs work
  • Enforce Market Rules for both vendors and clients assist with any vendor/customer disputes or conflicts advertise for new vendors
  • If there are weather issues or other concerns where the market needs to close early inform Alexi to post on SM - all decisions run through the Market Manager
  • Be prepared to assist with Market inspections (have all permits/licenses onsite)
  • Assist with special events at the Farmers Market: Shoe Bus Lady Lions Cone with Cops National Night Out etc.
  • Assist with any market initiatives: surveys for customers surveys for vendors customer daily counts etc.
  • Site Tear Down: Pick up boundary cones signage booth empty/wipe sink trash (bring trash back to CAPI) visuals posting materials/signage using trash pickers to pick up entire lot load van count and sign off on petty cash log stay onsite until all vendors have vacated the premises. Return the van keys. Cash box cash box keys snap readers to FS

Position Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent requirements

Desirable Experience

  • Financial tracking experience is strongly preferred.
  • Management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Community organizing is strongly preferred.
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience with driving a cargo van or large vehicles

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations especially immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Hmong language fluency strongly preferred
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism in communication attitude and teamwork clients staff vendors and management.

  • Ability to use & adapt to different technology tools including MS Office programs and
  • Ability to produce high quality work with attention to detail and consistent follow
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to exercise sound and rational judgement when assisting all visitors and answering
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Comfortable driving cargo van or large vehicles
    • Frequently required to set up and tear down Farmer Market Supervision station. (ability to lift 50 lbs)
    • Ability to frequently stand and walk (3-6 hours/day)
    • Ability to bend twist and turn frequently throughout the
    • Comfortability working in heat and rain until dangerous conditions of thunder/lightening

      This position is located at the Farmers Market every Thursday and also at the Temporary food shelf location at Shingle Creek Center (set up and teardown materials are located). The building is accessible and smoke free. This position works partly during works hours and goes into evening hours. Farmers Market hours are 1pm til 6pm.
