Job Description

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service health wellness social justice residential living food services sports recreation career services and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. The Associate Head Coach for Mens Basketball supports the head coach in the planning and operation of the Mens Basketball program. Their responsibilities include coordinating the recruitment process for prospective student-athletes assisting with practice and game coaching alumni engagement and fundraising efforts and providing guidance to assistant coaches and administrative personnel. Additionally they act as a liaison with various campus units such as the Compliance Office Strength & Conditioning Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Academic Support. Key responsibilities and accountabilities for the Associate Head Coach may include:

Practice and Game Plan Preparations & Strategies:

  • Assist head coach in practice and game plans for pre-season in-season post-season and summer training.
  • Develop and teach drills and techniques to advance player development.
  • Analyze and deliver scouting reports to guide strategies for upcoming opponents.
  • Provide real-time in-game assessments to implement necessary strategic adjustments.

Professionalism Student Experience & Development:

  • Display professionalism and support the department and basketball programs core values.
  • Act as a liaison between student-athletes and academic support staff to ensure academic compliance and achievement.
  • Develop and implement leadership programming within the structure of a team environment.

Recruitment of Student-Athletes:

  • Attend high school and club competitions nationwide to recruit student-athletes who will represent the university both on and off the court.
  • Assess talent academic profiles and character to determine the quality and potential of prospects.

Fan Engagement & Fundraising Support:

  • Collaborate with the departments fan engagement team to promote the program and games.
  • Assist the head coach in fostering relationships and participating in development activities with alumni and friends of the program.

Personnel Oversight:

  • Assist in directing and guiding the assistant coaches director of operations and student staff in managing the office practice travel and daily program activities.

The Associate Head Coach must also adhere to university conference and NCAA rules and regulations while assisting in overseeing the activities of assistant coaches staff and actively participate in and support fundraising efforts to build attendance spirit and financial support for the program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree with at least 6 years of coaching experience or equivalent combination of education and playing/coaching experience
  • Experience contributing to a positive student-athlete experience with a commitment to the health and safety of student-athletes and staff.
  • Proven success in coaching recruiting and in working with student athletes
  • Knowledge of NCAA and Ivy League rules and regulations and a strong commitment to rules compliance
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion belonging and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 or more years of successful coaching experience at an NCAA Division I institution.
