Position Summary
SSMA seeks a dynamic fluent Spanish-speaking teacher to join our Dual Language Immersion Program for the 2025-2026 school year. The Spanish Immersion Teacher will collaborate with the Montessori English Guide to deliver an authentic Montessori experience while immersing students in Spanish language and culture. This role focuses on teaching core subjects in Spanish to elementary students (grades 16) fostering fluency in speaking reading and writing and promoting cross-cultural friendships.
Our 50/50 two-way immersion model ensures students learn half the day in English and half in Spanish achieving grade-level standards in both languages. The ideal candidate is passionate collaborative and committed to nurturing multilingual leaders.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development: Design and implement a Montessori-aligned Spanish curriculum including scope and sequence unit plans and weekly lesson plans for Lower Elementary (grades 13) and Upper Elementary (grades 46). Create engaging Spanish follow-up works to support independent learning during work cycles.
- Instruction: Deliver small- and large-group lessons in Spanish teaching reading writing math science and social studies using strategies like sheltered instruction and inquiry-based learning to support language development.
- Collaboration: Partner with the English Guide to ensure seamless integration of Spanish and English instruction maintaining continuity in Montessori principles and academic goals.
- Classroom Environment: Foster a nurturing inclusive classroom that encourages learning respects student maturity and promotes the schools Grace and Courtesy values.
- Assessment: Regularly assess student progress provide feedback and maintain accurate records as required by school policies and regulations.
- Professional Growth: Attend staff meetings participate in professional development and collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching practices.
- Community Engagement: Communicate with parents and guardians offering support and updates on student progress and engage in school-wide events and committees as needed.
- Program Advocacy: Promote the goals and benefits of the Dual Language Immersion Program grounded in research on bilingual educations effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred.
- Certification: Valid teaching license in elementary education (grades K5) or Spanish (grades 68) or eligibility to obtain one within one year of hire. Montessori certification from a MACTE-accredited program (e.g. AMS AMI) preferred but not required.
- Language Proficiency: Advanced fluency in Spanish and English (written and spoken).
- Experience: 25 years of teaching Spanish to early childhood and/or elementary students preferably in a dual language or urban setting. Experience with diverse student populations is a plus.
- Skills: Strong understanding of second language acquisition ability to implement Montessori and Common Core standards and proficiency in classroom management.
