CAREER OPPORTUNITY: MANAGER OF COMMUNICATION LANGUAGE & SPEECH

ABOUT THE UPPER GRAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD (UGDSB)

The UGDSB employs a team of approximately 4000 dedicated staff who serve more than 35000 students attending a variety of programs across 65 elementary and 11 secondary schools as well as continuing education and adult learning centres in the counties of Dufferin Wellington and the City of Guelph. The UGDSB covers the ancestral and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit the Six Nations of the Grand River and Saugeen Ojibway Nation.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The UGDSB is seeking a dynamic individual to join our Student Support Services team in the capacity of Manager of Communication Language & Speech .

Location: Guelph Board Office (500 Victoria Road N Guelph ON) I Grant Evans Education Centre (40 Amelia Street Orangeville ON)

Hours of Work/FTE: 1.0 FTE; 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $139779 to $167685 per year

Board Information: 12 months; permanent full-time; Administrative Employees

Reporting to the Superintendent of Student Support Services the Manager of Communication Language & Speech leads the development and delivery of Speech Language Pathology and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services for students with communication disorders. This role involves consulting with system leaders to ensure aligned practices for students from kindergarten to age 21 who experience challenges in speaking listening reading and writing. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of speech language pathology occupational therapy and physiotherapy services provided by community agencies as well as managing protocols and purchasing of SEA technology for communication.

The Manager of Communication Language & Speech collaborates closely with other department leaders to support urgent and high needs situations.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the delivery of Speech Language Pathology Services for students in K-age-12
  • Determine priorities for service delivery and effectively communicate these to department staff schools and the community.
  • Develop and monitor service pathways for students based on area of need impact of communication disorder and age of student.
  • Manage the delivery of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for students in K-12
  • Develop and provide oversight for services using a common assessment and instructional framework.
  • Develop and provide oversight for services to support student communication (or learning to communicate) in American Sign Language.
MANAGER OF COMMUNICATION LANGUAGE & SPEECH
  • Oversee program development and evaluation to ensure evidence-based and culturally responsive practices are employed.
  • Program evaluation in collaboration with University Research Partners.
  • Review relevant research on evidence-based practices and apply key findings into current practices.
  • Provide leadership in the disruption of racism.
  • Collaborate with system leaders on the development implementation and oversight of tiered literacy instruction including educational and clinical staff.
  • Coordinate with community agencies providing speech language pathology occupational therapy and physiotherapy for students entering and/or attending school.
  • Collaborate with community agencies in the development of collaborative agreements.
  • Communicate with community agencies on policies and processes waitlists and referrals and coordinated clinical services.
  • Oversee parent and professional training as well as resource management (parent website and teacher website) for parent/guardians and school staff to support students with communication disorders.
  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of approximately thirty (30) direct reports (varies by year) including Speech Language Pathologists Communication Disorders Assistants Language Acquisition Support Workers Itinerant Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Educational Audiologist and Administrative Office Assistant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • A minimum of 7 years of school-based experience including significant supervisory experience in a school board or equivalent setting.
  • Registered and in good standing with College of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology of Ontario (CASLPO). Membership with Speech & Audiology Canada (SAC) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act Education Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
  • Experience providing and facilitating professional development opportunities.
  • Financial and budget management experience.
  • Experience in program development and management is required. Program evaluation experience is preferred.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience working with inter-disciplinary teams.
