Job Description

Position PurposeMiddle school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child and adolescent development learning strategies self-management and social skills. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period. Middle School Counselors provide critical support during the transition from childhood to young adulthood. They are a safe space where students can access resources and connect with teachers parents and administrators to ensure their needs are met. In addition to creating a caring learning environment that sets students up for academic and personal success counselors also intervene to remove learning barriers. Essential FunctionsOther duties may be school counselors have an impact by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff parents and the community to create a safe respectful learning environment whereby young adolescents can maximize personal and academic achievement. Middle school counselordefines and focuses the school counseling program based on the schools academic attendance and discipline data. identifies student needs through data and consults with administrators to guide program development. addresses student academic career and social/emotional development and balances delivery methods recognizing that students learn in multiple ways. collaborates with teachers and parents on early identification and intervention of childrens academic and social/emotional learning and promote academic career and social/emotional development. assess student abilities interests and achievements to help them decide about their professional assistance and support to a student or small group during transition heightened stress critical change or other situations impeding student success. recognizes and responds to student mental health needs and assists students and families seeking resources. shares strategies supporting student achievement with parents teachers educators and community organizations. works with other educators parents and the community to support student achievement provides support for students and families to school or community resources for additional assistance and information. applies current best practice knowledge towards daily implementation of a comprehensive school counseling the ability to navigate data to drive decision-making within the the ability to synthesize and apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed practicesunderstands and applies family and organizational systems theory and intervention to students with exposure to post-secondary options planning and programs to support exploring careers that align with interests. Crisis intervention and crisis management across student of state and federal laws relative to FERPA IEPs and direct instruction to students in large and small group or attends building-based support teams and/or TEAM meetingsdevelops and measures student plans that are part of a building-based support team recommendationsprovides consultation to individual students classroom teachers and teaching consultation to families as with child and adolescent state agencies such as DCF DMH DSS DDD and other community supports for students and cognitive-behavioral and short-term solution-focused treatment topic-focused adolescent groups and social skills that treatment methodologies are evidence-based and reflect the most recent research in planning and implementing student transition programs for students moving from middle school to high collaboratively with administrators to provide consultation as needed. SupervisionResponsibilities include training teachers/teaching assistants; planning assigning and directing work related to student behavior/ EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Education and experienceMasters Degree in School Counseling or related field required. Valid Massachusetts Teaching Certificate School Counselor. Teaching certification prior teaching experience preferred Knowledge Ability and SkillsAbility to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and families; to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form; and to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies. Ability to read analyze and interpret general periodicals professional journals research-based studies technical procedures or governmental regulations; write reports professional correspondence and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff parents and the general public. Ability to calculate figures and amounts as required such as percentages frequency and duration to analyze and interpret data. Ability to solve practical problems deal with various concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and interpret various instructions furnished in written oral and diagram or schedule form. Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Specific vision abilities required by the job includes close vision such as reading handwritten typed or electronic material distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
