Job Description

Summary

This position is open to King County Employees and the general public.

King County Metros Finance & Administration Division Asset Management Section is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated GIS Mapping Intern. This undergraduate-level internship offers an opportunity to apply and build your GIS skills while contributing to support agencys transit asset planning and management through its lifecycle. The intern will assist in creating GIS records from diverse data sources including PDFs CAD files and imagery while documenting workflows and developing GIS-based reports. This position is ideal for students with a strong interest in geospatial mapping digitizing and analysis and a desire to apply spatial information to support equitable and sustainable asset management. In a highly matrixed structure the position will report to the Director of Asset Management and work closely with a group of professionals from Metro internal divisions KCIT GIS Center and external consultants.

This position will work up to 40 hours a week during the summer months with the ability to continue working part-time until the end of the year 12/31/2025.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles to all aspects of the work.

As the GIS Mapping Intern you will:
  • Create GIS records from many different data sources (PDF CAD imagery etc.)
  • Document work performed for projects.
  • Create reports using GIS data.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • The student is currently enrolled or slated to be enrolled as astudent in a college/institutionbachelors degree program for the 2025/26 school year.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro/Desktop ArcGIS Enterprise and Web GIS applications.
  • Experience with both vector and raster data.
  • Attention to detail clear communication and careful note taking.
  • Bachelors degree in any of the following fields: geographic information systems geography transportation landscape architecture land use planning engineering natural resource management.

OR

  • Any combination of experience/education/training that provides the required knowledge skills and ability to perform the role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience digitizing data in GIS software

Final offers are contingent on the successful completion of reference checks. Proof of enrollment as a student in a college/institution bachelors degree program for the Spring 2025 and/or Fall 2025 quarters/semesters will be required at the time of hire.

Benefits

Interns receive a free ORCA transit pass for unlimited rides on King County Metro and Puget Sound region transit services. These classifications are not eligible for retirement holiday nor vacation pay.

Telecommuting

The work associated with this job classifications will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work. The specific mix can be agreed between Intern and supervisor. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

Interns must reside in Washington state during the period of this internship. Onsite work is most often completed via shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Unless accomplished via the provided ORCA card commuting to onsite work will be at the expense of the employee.
