Job Description

The Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities reports to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students and leads the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. The Director supervises professional staff members in the day-to-day operations of the office which includes the university-wide student conduct system student CARE and prevention programming. The Director manages institutional risk in the adjudication of cases conducts training and outreach provides consultation on student conduct issues and assures compliance with applicable laws and regulations. They adjudicate allegations of the Student Code of Conduct and assure that the management of case flow affords proper efficiency and workloads. Additionally the Director is responsible for assisting students with basic needs and other concerns in order to equip them to find success while at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

Salary:$65000 annually

Responsibilities:

Program Management of Conduct & Advocacy:

  • Investigate and adjudicate student conduct cases and coordinate complex cases with campus constituents.

  • Oversee individual student and student organization discipline while maintaining relations with appropriate campus offices and departments.

  • Ensure coordinated cooperation among various areas responsible for student conduct (i.e. University Housing Fraternity and Sorority Life) to establish consistency efficient workflow adherence to university policy and delineation of roles and responsibilities.

  • Educate students faculty and staff on due process rights of students and student organizations responding to allegations under the Student Code of Conduct and ensures that rights are preserved in the conduct process.

  • Work in partnership with Academic Affairs on the Academic Misconduct Process.

  • Assist in the development and refinement of restorative justice alternative dispute resolutions programs and admissions behavioral review processes.

  • Provides educational outreach programs to the University campus and surrounding community regarding conflict resolution the student conduct code and conduct process and other services that the Office of Student Conduct provides and serves as a resource to faculty staff and students who seek to resolve conflicts formally or informally.

  • Provide case management and administrative support and implantation of the university CARE program.

  • Implementation of university preventative programming policies and regulation adherence.

Administrative Operations:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Overseeing and managing a team of employees including assigning tasks monitoring performance providing feedback addressing employee issues training new hires and ensuring team goals are met.

  • Provide oversight support for student complaint and grievance process.

  • Ensures the effective administration of the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook through the selection training and supervision of staff annual goal setting and outcomes assessment maintenance of accurate and complete conduct records in compliance with the records retention policy and effective communication.

  • Oversee the management of judicial software systems.

  • Administer and approve budgetary expenditures.

  • Conduct research and leads assessment initiatives within the department.

  • Conducts an annual review of the Code of Conduct/Student Handbook and student conduct processes and recommends appropriate revisions and provides statistical reports and summaries for various departments and agencies regarding caseloads types of conduct cases and outcomes.

  • Provides leadership on university required reporting (e.g. DAAPP).

  • Provide leadership and training on accurate input and feature usage of the student conduct database. Recommend and implement changes as system capabilities and constituent needs arise.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with university officials local authorities community agencies and leaders.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Serve on designated University committees.

  • Complete special projects as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in related field.

  • Ten years of related experience in management.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Student Affairs Higher Education Law or related field and/or terminal degree.

  • Previous experience supervising professional staff.

  • Previous experience with Maxient student conduct software.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Diplomacy in dealing with students parents law enforcement personnel and other campus constituents on sensitive and confidential cases.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to student development and integrative learning.

  • Ability to analyze information and quantitative data and to apply relevant measurements in a productive way.

  • Excellent organizational management budgetary and leadership skills are required.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others are required.

  • Computer literacy and database experience are required.

  • The ability to manage and complete tasks in a timely manner and the ability to maintain accurate records and files is required.

  • The ability to develop knowledge of respect for and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

  • Knowledge of student development theory and student conduct processes and applicable laws such as the Clery Act and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Evidence of an effective leadership style experience in residence life and/or in student conduct and a background demonstrating success in dealing with students parents administrators and faculty.
