Who We Are:The Summer Writing Camp is a one-of-a-kind experience brought to you by the Department of English Language and Literature. We offer students (ages 818 grades 312) the perfect balance of writing skill development and fun recreational activities. Its a place where creativity flows laughter fills the air and lifelong memories are made.
The Role:As a Extra HelpSummer Writing Camp Counselor (Recreation) youll play an essential part in making our camp both educational and exciting. Youll work closely with other counselors teachers and university instructors to create an environment where students feel encouraged to explore their writing and let loose during free time activities. From leading sports and games to organizing arts & crafts youll be responsible for making every day a new adventure. Plus youll have the chance to learn from a dynamic team of educators and gain hands-on experience in both education and recreation.
What Youll Be Doing:
Lead and supervise campers (12 students per group) in fun safe and engaging recreational activities during breaks and free time.
Be a role model and positive presence for students helping them develop teamwork communication and leadership skills.
Collaborate with the camp director and other staff members to maintain a supportive and energetic atmosphere.
Help ensure the safety and well-being of all campers throughout the day.
Assist with light administrative tasks as needed and contribute to the smooth operation of the camp.

Previous experience working with kids in a recreational educational or leadership role is a plus.

Camp Details:
Dates: July(Monday-Friday)
Hours: Full-time (Monday to Friday 9:00 AM 4:00 PM)
Enrollment: Limited to 72 campers with groups averaging 12 students per session.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Currently enrolled in or completed a Bachelors program. Had previous recreational experience working with children in a summer camp for at least one summer. Supplemental Information

Extra Help job listings typically close 24 hours after the opening date unless specified in the closing Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within the university. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Workdays and hours may vary according to departmental Help employees do not receive SIUE benefits holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.
Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with SIUE including your position on and Civil Service register. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System candidates must be a current Illinois resident.
Pre- Employment Screening: All external candidates who receive a job offer will be required to undergo pre-employment screening for this position. The screening process will encompass a criminal background check and where applicable other background checks such as a drug screen verification of employment and education or licensure/certification reference checks and/or checks with relevant government registries. Additional Information: This position does not offer work authorization sponsorship. International students at SIUE on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for full-time or part-time civil service positions with permanent status. F-1 and J-1 visa holders must be enrolled full-time and can only apply for temporary part-time roles working 20 hours or less per week during spring and fall semesters such as student worker positions assistantships and civil service extra help roles. SIUE is a state university and its important to highlight that benefits from state-sponsored plans may not be accessible to individuals on F1 or J1 visas.
