Two openings are available.

A GIS Intern will:
  • Read analyze and interpret various items such as technical documents legal documents operating and procedure manuals general business periodicals professional journals government regulation.
Benefits:
  • This position is eligible for Washington Paid Sick Leave (1 hour for every 40 hours worked).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities mayinclude but are not limited to the following:
Key Responsibilities:

  1. GIS Asset Backlog:
    • Use VUEWorks software filters to extract work orders related to asset updates or replacements.
    • Update GIS layers with new assets and attributes as outlined in work orders.
    • Associate GIS assets with corresponding work orders ensuring accurate tracking and maintenance records.
    • Review existing GIS assets and verify asset attributes through desktop reconnaissance and fieldwork.
  2. GIS Asset Topology Review:
    • Review GIS asset topology and make necessary adjustments to create connectivity in the stormwater system.
    • Perform GIS analysis to identify catchment basins based on the connectivity of the stormwater system and outfall locations.
  3. Street Sign Inventory:
    • Perform a systematic review of street signs using Google Street View and fieldwork as needed.
    • Cross-check existing GIS assets for completeness and add any missing signs to the database.
    • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the citys street sign inventory.
  4. As-Built Digitization Workflows:
    • Collaborate with departments to prioritize and process historical as-built documents.
    • Georeferenced PNG or JPEG as-built to their respective locations in GIS.
    • Digitize and map new assets into GIS layers ensuring data consistency with published feature services.
    • Assist in appending digitized data to authoritative layers in the GIS Portal.

    • Gain hands-on experience with GIS software including ArcGIS and VUEWorks.
    • Learn georeferencing techniques and digitization workflows for integrating historical data into modern GIS systems.
    • Develop skills in database management asset mapping attributes and metadata accuracy.
  2. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
    • Enhance the ability to interpret and process work orders and as-built documents.
    • Develop a systematic approach to verifying and updating GIS assets.
  3. Professional and Fieldwork Experience:
    • Understand the role of GIS in public works and infrastructure management.
    • Improve communication and collaboration skills through departmental interactions.
    • Gain fieldwork exposure by auditing and verifying physical assets.
OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SCHEDULE:
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week during the quarter; university breaks mid-terms and finals are excluded. Additional hours may be available dependent upon the candidates schedule. Up to 40 hours per week may be available during the summer.
  • Internship length is flexible dependent on the candidates availability. Estimated length is ten (10) weeks with a maximum of twenty (20) weeks allowed.

Qualifications

Education:
Must be enrolled or have obtained your diploma within the last twelve (12) months in an Associates Bachelors or Masters degree program in Geography geospatial urban planning or related program with demonstrated course work in GIS.
Must Posses Knowledge Skills and Ability to:

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid drivers license and a driving record that meets the citys requirements or must be able to obtain a State of Washington drivers license within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of position-relevant background check.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
In order to ensure interns gain beneficial insight of public service during the course of their time with the City interns are expected to:
  • Attend a minimum of one (1) City Council meeting.
  • Attend at least one community City-sponsored or City-affiliated event or special meeting.
  • Give a presentation at the conclusion of the internship program to the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Attend at least 2 Impact Sessions or shadow at least 2 other city employees.

While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is regularly required to use hands to finger handle or feel; talk; and hear. The incumbent is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time and type on a keyboard for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to stand walk reach with hands and arms climb or balance and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance color and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is performed in a typical office environment subject to working outside of normal working hours to meet critical timelines or to provide support in department emergency response events.
While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is subject to multiple interruptions by telephones and walk-ins by employees elected officials and citizens; may be exposed to individuals who are irate or hostile. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Typical business office machinery and equipment include but not limited to personal computer including database program spreadsheet and word processing software printer telephone scanning equipment and copy machine.
