What Were About:The Summer Writing Camp hosted by the Department of English Language and Literature is a two-week immersive experience where students (ages 818 grades 312) dive into the world of writing developing their skills in a hands-on engaging way. The camp combines intensive writing workshops with an energetic recreational program to keep things fun and balanced. As a Writing Counselor youll work directly with small groups of campers and help them grow as writers all while fostering a creative and supportive atmosphere.
What Youll Be Doing:
Lead writing workshops with campers guiding them through the process of developing their skills in storytelling essay writing poetry and more!
Provide constructive feedback on campers work to help them improve and find their unique voice.
Inspire and encourage campers during writing exercises creative activities and group discussions.
Collaborate with other staff members (teachers university instructors and recreational counselors) to ensure an engaging and supportive environment for all.
Foster a fun and inclusive camp culture by incorporating interactive writing games group projects and more!
Assist the camp director with logistics and be an active part of the camps day-to-day operations.
What Were Looking For:
A strong passion for writing and a genuine interest in helping students develop their creative potential.
Experience in teaching tutoring or mentoring students especially in writing or English language arts.
Creative energy and a positive encouraging attitude that helps students feel comfortable expressing themselves.
Ability to adapt to different learning styles and interestsevery camper is unique!
Strong communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
A willingness to learn and grow alongside campers and staff.
Camp Details:
Dates: July(MondayFriday)
Hours: Full-time (9:00 AM 4:00 PM MondayFriday)
Camp Enrollment: 72 campers total grouped by grade level (approximately 12 students per group).

Has experience teaching English composition in the classroom (at least two semesters).

There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System candidates must be a current Illinois resident.

The screening process will encompass a criminal background check and where applicable other background checks such as a drug screen verification of employment and education or licensure/certification reference checks and/or checks with relevant government registries. Additional Information: This position does not offer work authorization sponsorship. International students at SIUE on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for full-time or part-time civil service positions with permanent status. F-1 and J-1 visa holders must be enrolled full-time and can only apply for temporary part-time roles working 20 hours or less per week during spring and fall semesters such as student worker positions assistantships and civil service extra help roles. SIUE is a state university and its important to highlight that benefits from state-sponsored plans may not be accessible to individuals on F1 or J1 visas.
