Job Description

Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist Reports To: Building Administrator/Director of Student ServicesQUALIFICATIONS:Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE)Speech Language Pathologist certificateIn accordance with Rhode Islands Right to Read Act all educators must demonstrate awareness of and/or proficiency in the Science of Reading. Preferred candidates will have completed an approved Right to Read training program or possess current certification of proficiency or awareness. If not already trained the selected candidate must demonstrate a willingness to complete approved training within their first year of SUMMARY:The position of speech language pathologist is to improve the academic achievement of students with disabilities who are identified with communication disabilities and needs; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success in the school setting and to contribute to the development of IEP goals and DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Implements and supports the district curriculum; Adheres to the policies of the Portsmouth School Department2. Adheres to special education policies and completes relevant paperwork3. Attends and actively contributes to special education meetings4. Promotes the attainment of the Districts mission vision and strategic plan5. Displays strong and deep knowledge of subject matter content6. Understands how knowledge is constructed within the discipline7. Applies current research-based best instructional practices and strategies to help students access the curriculum8. Communicates high and clear expectations for students9. Integrates technology to more effectively deliver speech/language services10. Prepares and delivers lessons to optimize student learning11. Promotes deep understanding of content by addressing unique learning styles and assists teams and teachers in adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students12. Demonstrate knowledge of communication disorders specifically articulation fluency voice and resonance receptive and expressive language hearing swallowing cognitive aspects of communications social aspects of communication and communication modalities.13. Develop select and recommend multimodal augmentative and alternative communication systems14. Facilitates student learning through the use of various collaborative grouping structures that are appropriate to the instructional task15. Administers a variety of assessments shares findings with key stakeholders and interprets assessment data in order to understand communication difficulties that impact student performance16. Actively participate in evaluation and IEP teams 504 teams and student watch/RTI teams in order to provide teams with recommendations for addressing communication difficulties.17. Uses student data in treatment/intervention design and adjusts service delivery based on results of ongoing progress monitoring18. Promotes deep understanding of content by addressing unique learning styles adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students engaging students in rigorous learning experiences using effective questioning techniques and relating instruction to the students life and to prior and future learning.19. Develops and implements Individual Educational Plans (IEP) to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.20. Facilitates student learning through the use of various collaborative grouping structures that are appropriate to the instructional task21. Requires students to regularly engage in high-level activities including but not limited to application andanalysis of information.22. Administers and interprets various types of assessments23. Monitors student progress and maintains accurate records through regular formative and summative assessment of curriculum and goal attainment; adjusts instruction for individuals and groups of students.24. Assists students in monitoring their own progress25. Organizes all facets of the instructional delivery system so that all equipment and instructional tools are ready for use and to ensure smooth transitions maximize time on task and guarantee the efficient distribution of resources26. Communicates regularly with students and parents regarding the students academic behavioral social and emotional status; communicates immediately with both when there are concerns27. Serves as a resource to building-level staff and administrators regarding the communication needs of students28. Takes responsibility for personal professional growth29. Other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator or Director of Student Services
