Job Title:

High School Special Education Department Head - Newton North

FLSA Status:

(Exempt/Non-exempt)

Exempt; Unit B

Reports to:

Principal/Special Education Director

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Department Head provides innovative special education leadership to ensure the highest standards of excellence and equity across the department and school.

QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Masters Degree or higher in special education or related field
  • Massachusetts DESE licensure as an Administrator of Special Education
  • Three or more years of experience as a special education administrator
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education program design and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education law and regulations
  • Ability to effectively supervise evaluate coach and mentor teachers aides counselors and specialists
  • Ability to partner across the school to ensure a collaborative and integrated approach to supporting the needs of students with disabilities from a strength-based perspective
  • Ability to work with data to ensure continuous improvement and excellence across all aspects of the special education system
  • Ability to engage and ensure that disproportionate patterns of referral and eligibility are addressed and interrupted
  • Ability to think and plan creatively in partnership with building leadership to support the needs of struggling students who do not have disabilities
  • Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use technology effectively
  • Demonstrated organizational skills


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a high school special education administrator
  • Deep understanding of transition programming and wraparound supports
  • Experience supervising and/or working with special education staff
  • Experience working in a large school district
  • Innovative approach to programming

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Organize supervise and evaluate special education staff members
  • Develop establish and lead departments strategic plan in collaboration with the school improvement plan.
  • Supervise the design and development of innovative and individual education programs for special education students
  • Assist the department in the handing of day-to-day issues that arise within the department
  • Monitor and provide appropriate consultation services for the department
  • Prepare and provide professional development for department staff and communicates on a regular basis with students staff and parents to ensure effective delivery of services
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students
  • Responsible for implementing other job related duties as needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment:

  • Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job the teacher is frequently required to walk stand sit talk and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend stoop crouch and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and /or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
