Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for a Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach to support all secondary schools. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Reading/English Language Arts Instruction the Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach implements comprehensive school-based staff development and provides support to staff members at designated middle or high schools. The Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach also collaborates with district stakeholders to enhance opportunities for all students to be successful.
DUTIES:
- Ability to build strong collaborative relationships with teachers/administrators in a variety of settings to provide support on a full range of literacy strategies.
- Work with all community and building stakeholders to develop a school-wide culture of literacy as well as focus on interdisciplinary literacy to improve students reading writing and communication skills.
- Plan and provide high quality staff development as outlined in the Maryland Professional Development Standards and provide written records of the same.
- Engage in the implementation of the coaching cycle (before during after) to provide feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy development and content area knowledge; the development of a comprehensive assessment program that uses a range of assessment tools including both formative and summative assessments as well as work within Unify to create district-wide assessments.
- Function as a facilitator in the collaborative planning process to analyze student work and monitor progress.
- Analyze and interpret data from local and state assessments to assess student needs and progress.
- Collaborate with other coaches and the Supervisor of RELA to implement district-wide literacy initiatives.
- Ensure that instruction and curriculum are aligned with Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards and participate in necessary modifications.
- Be able to lead in an effective and disciplined way teams of teachers working to improve the curriculum instruction and assessment in the schools.
- Have the skills and knowledge to mentor new teachers or less skilled teachers to enable them to develop their skills.
- Teach students using culturally responsive and trauma-informed pedagogy.
- Serve on building- and district-level committees.
- Represent the district at the state level as opportunities arise such as curriculum vetting literacy initiatives and/or community-related events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possessesa Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate required.
- Has obtained an education related masters degree; preferred.
- Minimum of five years recent satisfactory experience teaching English in grades 6-12.
- Experience as a trainer for staff development to teachers with proven knowledge of current research and best practices in secondary reading instruction writing instruction and disciplinary literacy.
- Proficiency in utilizing data discussion protocols.
- Technology skills including the ability to learn new software applications.
