Job Description

Company Background:

Alta Forest Products in partnership with Itochu Building Products is the worlds largest producer of wood fence boards. It specializes in Western Red Cedar and other premium species found in the Pacific and Inland Northwest forests. In addition to producing fence boards and pallet stock lumber Altas zero-wood-waste sawmills produce by-products such as wood chips sawdust mulch and biofuel.


Our headquarters is centrally located in Chehalis Washington. Alta operates fence board sawmills in four rural communities in the Northwest: Morton WA; Shelton WA; Amanda Park WA; and Naples ID. We also have two reload facilities in Eastport ID and Winlock WA.


The Role:

The Log Quality Manager oversees the quality control of logs delivered to our Alta sawmills and remote buying locations. This role involves regular site visits and collaboration with mill and log yard staff to identify opportunities for improvement address challenges and maintain effective communication with log buyers and accounting teams. The manager ensures that quality standards are consistently met across all delivery points.


The Log Quality Manager will supervise scalers at various locations to ensure adequate staffing levels and promptly address scaling-related issues. This position also includes conducting internal checks scaling audits and visiting logging sites to educate suppliers on proper manufacturing techniques. The ideal candidate should possess strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality assurance in the forestry industry.


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the quality control of logs delivered to Alta sawmills and remote buying locations.
  • Conduct regular site visits to assess log quality and compliance with standards.
  • Collaborate with mill and log yard staff to identify improvements and address challenges.
  • Maintain effective communication with log buyers and accounting teams to ensure smooth operations.
  • Supervise scalers at various locations to ensure adequate staffing and resolve scaling-related issues.
  • Conduct internal checks and scaling audits to verify accuracy and consistency in log measurements.
  • Visit logging sites to educate suppliers on proper manufacturing techniques and quality expectations.
  • Ensure that quality standards are consistently met across all delivery points.
  • Document findings and report on quality control metrics to management.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to enhance quality assurance processes.
  • May assist with other fiber procurement and administration activities
  • Work with Alta Log Quality personnel suppliers customers and the companys log yard supervisors to correct log flow or quality problems
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers buyers and industry professionals
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure efficient and effective operations
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelors degree in forestry business or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of sawmilling operations and prior log scaling is a plus
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the timber/sawmilling industry required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all assignments
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work autonomously with a varied work schedule
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other industry-specific software
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation
  • Willingness to work outdoors and in various weather conditions

Work Environment

This role will operate in a home or professional office log yards sawmills and varying outdoor environments including forest roads. While performing the duties of this job employees may regularly be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts. This position will often be exposed to noise hazards airborne particulates temperature changes both indoors and outdoors and weather conditions.

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile.
  • This position requires the occasional use of basic hand tools.
  • The employee will need to frequently lift or carry 25 pounds or more and may at times be required to lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires standing sitting walking bending kneeling and stooping for extended lengths of time.
  • The employee must frequently use hands to finger handle or feel; climb or balance.
  • Employees may be required to hike in steep densely forested terrain.
  • Requires frequent automobile travel.

Position Type/Travel/Schedule

  • This position is exempt per FLSA guidelines and is not eligible for overtime.
  • A typical schedule requires the ability to work 40 hours a week and the flexibility to work evenings or weekends to accommodate critical goals and objectives.
  • Must be self-disciplined and able to work independently in a remote office setting.
  • This is a full-time position; overtime work may be required as projects or job duties demand.
  • Travel is expected regularly (30%) and often on short notice.
