Job Description

Assistant Principal K-8

The Assistant Principal of Kindergarten to Grade 8 shall be designated by the Superintendent of Schools to have the general responsibility on a full-time basis for the proper and efficient operation of the building under the supervision of the building principal and provide for instructional leadership for the implementation of curriculum and instruction.

Required Experience:

  • Masters degree in Education from an accredited institution in Elementary or Secondary Administration.
  • Five years experience in teaching experience.
  • SEI Endorsement.
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Certification as a Principal/Assistant Principal Grades K-8.

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with an urban school district.
  • Proficiency in reading writing and speaking in another language in addition to English.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities and multilingual learners.

Candidate Must Possess:

  • Strong background in curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners specifically English Learners and students with disabilities with experience in program design evaluation and management.
  • Ability to lead a large complex comprehensive school.
  • Ability to develop the full potential of a highly competent staff.
  • A proven record in the management of student discipline and student activities.
  • Superior skills in articulating the goals and objectives of the school to the community of Everett.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and effective culturally responsive teaching strategies.
  • Effective culturally responsive communication skills with staff and families.
  • Knowledge of the data cycle and data analysis for action planning and accountability to leaders to disrupt patterns of inequity and well-serve richly diverse student bodies with varied educational needs.
  • Extensive knowledge of the ASPEN student management system including scheduling.
  • Extensive knowledge of Massachusetts student and staff reporting (EPIMS/SIMS).
  • Ability to administer and schedule MCAS and ACCESS testing.
  • Experience developing positive caring relationships with students family members and staff to ensure that school community members feel valued respected equitably supported and a sense of belonging in the school community.
  • Ability to provide effective timely and meaningful supervision and evaluation of staff.
  • Knowledge of compliance with state and federal laws and mandates policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Essential Duties:

  • The Assistant Principal shall be visible and active as an educational leader in the community.
  • The Assistant Principal shall have the general supervision of the staff grounds building and appearance of the school.
  • The Assistant Principal shall be held responsible for the appearance and cleanliness of the premises and whenever repairs are needed shall give notice thereof in writing to the Maintenance Department through the school custodian.
  • The Assistant Principal shall have general charge of the supervision and discipline of the pupils in the building. At such times the Assistant Principal may call upon teachers for assistance and require them to perform any duties that may be necessary in order to support the social academic and emotional well-being of all students.
  • The Assistant Principal shall render such assistance in the supervision of methods of instruction and discipline as the Superintendent shall direct and require.
  • The Assistant Principal shall give advice and direction to teachers in any emergency.
  • The Assistant Principal shall attend all school events at their school.
  • The Assistant Principal shall under the direction of the Superintendent have control of the custodians in the building shall see that the rules for their governance are enforced and shall report in writing to the Superintendent any neglect of duty or improper conduct on their part. Instructional Leadership:

  • Coordinate curriculum design and scheduling with district leaders the teaching staff and other personnel to supervise curriculum instructional techniques.
  • Collaborates with a diverse team to develop and execute effective and culturally responsive operational systems procedures and routines that ensure an inclusive equitable and safe school community that maximizes student learning.
  • Evaluate all assigned staff together with the principal school and district leaders in accordance with the School Committees Rules and Regulations the Everett Teachers Association and the Everett School Administrators Association contract.
  • Conduct an instructional supervision program and evaluate all building personnel under his/her jurisdiction with the building principal.
  • Implement and supervise curriculum with Department Chairs and the Director of Guidance.
  • Participate in and provide for an exchange of ideas through instructional leadership meetings common planning time and individual conferences to support teachers professional practice and student learning goals and ensure alignment with the school and district improvement plan.
  • Provide curriculum insights to school and district leaders through the regular and frequent review of daily lesson plans.
  • Employ an efficient system for pupil and program appraisal and make recommendations for changes needed so that all programs can meet the needs of all students.
  • Work closely with the building Educational Team Leader to ensure all Individual Educational Plans (IEP) are compliant and ensure instructional programming for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate manage and oversee the Student and Teacher Assistance and Remediation Team (START) process.
  • Consult with school and district leaders and other resource personnel for educational planning of student activities by implementing building operations.
  • Provide leadership and initiative for organizational improvements.
  • Review and approve the Individual Professional Development Plans of teachers.
  • Ensure implementation and support for the quarterly assessment cycle and participate in any data analysis sessions to make suggestions for improvement.
  • Assist the Principal in developing the School Improvement Plan to meet district goals for the school and the building-based assessment survey needs.
  • Assist the Principal and district leaders in developing and monitoring the curriculum alignment in accordance with the State Frameworks and MCAS results.
  • Demonstrate evidence of monitoring classroom implementation of the curriculum with the proper strategies and techniques to impact student achievement positively with a specific focus on student groups including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
  • Ensure that classroom instruction is based on student data analysis.
  • Monitor and use school-level and disaggregated data research and best practices to eliminate learning inequities across race gender ethnicity language disability and ability and other aspects of student identities.

Management and Operations:

  • Understands and complies with all state and federal laws mandates policies and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Provides ongoing training and support to staff that ensure student health safety and well-being. Developing age-appropriate and culturally and linguistically sustaining social-emotional competencies in students (self-awareness self-management social awareness relationship skills and responsible decision-making).
  • Prevent and address bullying and other unsafe behaviors with timely responses and restorative practices.
  • Fostering and utilizing partnerships with outside agencies and organizations to address student needs proactively and systematically.
  • Implement effective systems for attendance student entry dismissal meals class transitions assemblies and recess.
  • Counsel building staff as required and assist the Principal with the Everett Public Schools Induction/Mentoring Program.
  • Prepare letters and written reports and make oral presentations regarding administrative activities.
  • Supervise the ordering of materials for instruction textbooks and equipment.
    Review operational cost factors including vandalism utilities repairs maintenance building renovations and teaching substitute costs.
  • Promote a healthy and safe environment.
  • Supervise the preparation of state federal and central office reports.
    Supervise substitute procedures.
  • Supervise cafeteria services with the cooperation and support of the School Lunch Manager.
  • Maintain building inventories of educational materials furniture and equipment.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring the Individual Student Plans with quarterly updates.
  • Coordinate referrals to the Special Education Department Guidance Department and Department of English Learners.
  • Participate in the hiring recruitment placement evaluation and dismissal of teachers.
  • Supervise the plans to determine develop and implement the students master schedule with related teacher programs and duties.
  • Plan fire drills and emergency evacuation plans for the facility and ensure compliance with the district and schools emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Supervise the buildings scheduling of visitors observers practice teachers and Special Education meetings.

Family and Community Engagement:

  • Communicate effectively with families through school programs letters telephone calls and personal contacts that promote a sense of belonging and inclusion and are responsive to the needs of a multilingual community.
  • Meet with families community groups and agencies to support the goals of an inclusive and equitable school community.
  • Support the social academic and emotional well-being of all students.
  • Coordinate school operations with the Police Department Fire Department Board of Health and other agencies.
  • Ensure that all physical spaces are safe accessible and welcoming and honor and celebrate the diversity and achievements of the school community.

Professional Culture:

  • Attend and participate in various professional and in-service meetings that enhance the educational goals of the schools as approved and directed by the Superintendent.
  • Adhere to the Everett Administrators contract regarding the Assistant Principals duties.
  • Adhere to the Everett School Committees Rules and Regulations and all directives of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents.
  • Assist the Principal in planning faculty meetings.
  • Participate in system-wide committees as required.
  • Perform any other duties and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job the Assistant Principal is regularly required to communicate effectively.
  • The Assistant Principal must frequently stand walk sit use hands reach with hands and arms and stoop kneel crouch crawl climb and run.
  • The Assistant Principal must occasionally be able to lift and/or move children/objects.
  • The Assistant principal must be able to work in a noisy stressful high-pressure environment and still be able to concentrate and keep children safe.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies (e.g. injured student fights behavior problems abusive students etc).
  • The job is performed under conditions with exposure to the risk of injury and/or illness although in a clean environment.


Salary:

Salary for this position will be in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Everett School Committee and the Everett Teachers Association (Unit B)
