Job Description

The anticipated duration of this assignment is approximately 3 months.

The Hospital Assistant III provides patient-centered support in the Pulmonary and Sleep department under the supervision of the Practice Supervisor/Manager. This role contributes to high-quality patient care by performing a range of clinical operational and administrative functions. The assistant collaborates closely with providers nurses and administrative staff to support smooth clinical operations accurate documentation and exceptional patient experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Obtain and document vital signs pain scale and patient history.
  • Assist providers and nurses with exams procedures and patient preparation.
  • Update medication lists review labs and upload/download data in APeX.
  • Provide chaperone support and float coverage across the department.
  • Mentor new staff and support clinical team with inbox and referral management.
  • Participate in daily huddles chart audits and patient education efforts.
  • Coordinate specialty care including DME orders and prior authorization processes.

Registration & Scheduling

  • Register and schedule patients for appointments and procedures.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and obtain required authorizations.
  • Support provider scheduling and patient communication.
  • Ensure accuracy of patient information in compliance with HIPAA standards.

Communication

  • Uphold UCSFs Telephone and House Standards.
  • Address patient concerns with professionalism and timely follow-up.
  • Communicate delays to patients and staff and collaborate to resolve service issues.
  • Document appropriately in APeX and support clear team communication.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain clean stocked exam rooms and adhere to infection control protocols.
  • Support QI and customer service initiatives.
  • Participate in equipment maintenance supply ordering and environment safety.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

  • At least 6 months of experience in an outpatient setting.


    • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience.
    • Knowledge of insurance verification prior authorizations and patient assistance resources.
    • Familiarity with pulmonary or sleep medicine practices.
    • Bilingual in Cantonese or Spanish.
    • Experience with EPIC (ApeX).
    • Bachelors degree in Health or Behavioral Science.
    • Advanced understanding of insurance workflows.
