Job Description

Job Title: Certified Police Officer

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Department: Assigned Campus (es)

Reports To: Chief of Police/Designee licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement

Approved By: Superintendent

SUMMARY:

Patrols district property to protect all students personnel and visitors from physical harm and prevent property loss due to theft or vandalism. Enforces all laws including municipal ordinances county ordinances and state laws. Works independently.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED

Associates Degree preferred

EXPERIENCE:

Background in law enforcement or related work experience

Three (3) years of full time paid employment as a Peace Officer (Required)

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS

Texas Peace Officer License Issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

Valid Texas Drivers License

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to use district vehicles two-way radio handcuffs alarm systems fire extinguishers flashlights and/or security equipment
  • Ability to record information
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and the community
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • General knowledge of criminal investigation police report writing and criminal laws
  • Training and ability to subdue offenders including use of firearms and handcuffs
  • Bondable as required by Texas Education Code 37.081(h)
  • Ability to pass required physical psychiatric and drug tests
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Law Enforcement

  1. Patrol assigned campus (es) and routes walking or driving within district jurisdiction;
  2. Respond to all calls from campuses concerning crisis situations and reports of crime;
  3. Investigate all criminal offenses that occur within the districts jurisdiction;
  4. Question witness and suspects and takes statements;
  5. Arrest perpetrators file appropriate charges and ensure placement in jail or juvenile detention centers for law violations as necessary;
  6. Process juveniles and complete necessary paperwork;
  7. Serve felony misdemeanor and mental commitment warrants;
  8. Investigate traffic accidents that occur on school district property and respond to accidents involving school district vehicles off school district property;
  9. Gather and label evidence takes photographs and fingerprints guard & transport prisoners and testify in court;
  10. Write effective legal incident and offense reports.

Consultation

  1. Work cooperatively with other agencies to share information and provide other assistance.

Safety

  1. Help provide traffic control at athletic events school closings or openings or at any other time;
  2. Assist the Transportation Department with problems at bus stop areas and/or chronic disruptions on school buses as requested;
  3. Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed;
  4. Defuse potentially hostile situations;
  5. Operate all equipment including firearms according to established safety procedures;
  6. Conduct presentations for students and staff regarding safety and security;
  7. May address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities and crime prevention.

Administration

  1. Compile maintain and file all reports records and documents required including affidavits for arrest incident reports.

Other

  1. Must be familiar with Donna ISD policy and procedures;
  2. Must follow the Educators Code of Ethics
  3. Must maintain confidentiality;
  4. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance;
  5. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned;
  6. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments;
  7. Subject to reassignment as determined by the Chief of Police or Superintendent;
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or immediate supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Security Officer (When applicable)

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators teachers students parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical diagram or schedule form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job strenuous walking standing and climbing is required. Specific hearing and visual requirements are included. Ability to operate a motor vehicle is required. The employee must be able to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. This employee may be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions including violent and armed confrontations. Moderate to heavy lifting and carrying is required.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.
