Overview

The North Carolina Justice Center is a progressive research and advocacy organization dedicated to expanding opportunity and protecting the rights of low-income individuals in North Carolina. For over 29 years the Justice Center has been on the front lines in the courts in the legislature in the media and in communities advocating for positive changes. The mission is to eliminate poverty in North Carolina by ensuring that every household in the state has access to the resources services and fair treatment it needs to achieve economic security.

The Staff Attorney for Immigration Law in the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project is responsible for providing high-quality direct representation to low-income immigrants in North Carolina as they navigate the path to legal status advocating for justice in a challenging policy environment. They will also provide policy analysis/advocacy. The attorney will serve as a resource on immigration law and policy to internal stakeholders and other immigration attorneys advocates partners and government agencies across the state. The Staff Attorney will work independently with general oversight of work by the Project Director.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Maintain a caseload of complex immigration cases. Represent clients in immigration matters that may include but are not limited to: affirmative and defensive asylum removal defense cancellation of removal Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and cases involving U

and T visas. This representation will include proceedings at USCIS offices Immigration Court and the Board of Immigration Appeals. Develop and maintain expertise on issues related to immigration law and practice immigrants rights and immigration policy at the state and federal levels.

Analyze immigrant related legal developments at the state and federal level and participate and lead in advocacy efforts to defend the rights of the immigrant and refugee communities in North Carolina.

Collaborate with other Justice Center staff to address systemic issues facing immigrants and refugees in North Carolina.

Conduct community education and presentations on immigration law and immigrants rights issues throughout the state.

Lead and participate in legal clinics and other community-based events.

Develop and maintain relationships with other advocacy groups that work on immigrants rights including national and state legal service providers and community partners.

Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

J.D. and bar admission in North Carolina

At least three years of immigration legal experience required.

Strong organizational skills attention to detail ability to work independently ability to work collaboratively ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Strong writing legal research and oral advocacy skills.

Spanish language proficiency required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other legal case management software.

Demonstrated commitment to social justice and immigrants rights ability to recognize the barriers facing immigrant communities and experience working with low-income individuals.

Some travel evening and weekend work is required.

Work Environment

Home NCJCs Raleigh office and other offsite meeting spaces as required. Some evening and weekend work may occur.
