Job Description:

As a member of the Case Management Team the NSP Crime Laboratory Forensic Technician is assigned responsibilities related to case file and evidence management. These responsibilities involve numerous complex tasks related to processing the submission of evidence for analysis and release back to the submitting law enforcement agency. Critical thinking and problem-solving techniques are critical to ensure the accuracy and validity of information as part of the submission process. The Forensic Technician ensures the security and integrity of evidence is maintained while in the custody of the laboratory. This position builds relationships with criminal justice partners to ensure efficient effective information sharing in the pursuit of justice.


Job Duties:

  • Receives transfers and releases evidence submitted to the Crime Laboratory requires focus organization and planning skills.
  • Ensures proper seals are on evidence upon submission and maintains security of evidence while in the possession of the Crime Laboratory - requires integrity attention to detail and tenacity.
  • Research/ Investigates submissions to ensure proper agency numbers dates names and evidence are being received requires accuracy attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ensures quality data entry through review of work requires good data entry and attention to detail skills.
  • Contacts submitting agencies to resolve discrepancies and clarify analysis requests documenting all communications requires effective communication (both verbal and written) and listening skills.
  • Distributes Laboratory reports and prepares certified mail packets require critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Manages onsite case files through performing regular audits to ensure case file contents are correct and preparing files for archiving requires attention to detail.
  • Adapts to changing environments ensuring highest quality is always maintained requires calm critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Receives visitors and responds to information requests from law enforcement partners requires great customer service and communication skills.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework training or experience in evidence preservation/collection/processing procedures and in basic automated database/spreadsheet software applications. OR Two years experience in maintaining records related to stores keeping materials handling supplies delivery/inventory including experience in basic database/spreadsheet software applications. OR Associates degree in criminal justice natural/health/laboratory applied sciences paralegal studies or related disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a law enforcement/ criminal justice setting; Bachelors degree in Forensic Science or Criminal Justice related field.

Other: Must be able to lift 50 pounds and possess a valid drivers license. Regular and reliable attendance is expected. Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to your applicant information. Must successfully complete an extensive background screening prior to being employed which includes completion of a Personal History Questionnaire. Applicants will be screened for a record of criminal activity and criminal history using a fingerprint-based check before a final offer of employment is made. Applicants must be free of felony convictions and cannot maintain continuous association or dealings with persons groups or organizations whom they know or should know are persons or groups or organizations under criminal investigation or indictment or who have a reputation for present involvement in felonious or criminal behavior. Selection process will include several interviews.

  • Basic criminal justice processes or court proceedings
  • English grammar spelling vocabulary and pronunciation rules and usage
  • Various computer software programs.

  • Operating computer terminals and office equipment
  • Entering and retrieving information from agency computer databases.

Ability to:

  • Interact with listen to and respond appropriately to representatives of state city and county offices co-workers medical and other professionals criminals and the public under diverse and stressful circumstances
  • Prioritize workflow
  • Understand the importance of preserving evidence and how it can affect any types of criminal cases
  • Communicate verbally and in writing information distinctly and concisely.
