Job Description

Do you want to make a meaningful impact within your community Do you have front-line social services or customer service experience The Mustard Seed is looking for Street Level Worker - Relief who will be tasked to provide a safe and welcoming environment for guests donors and volunteers.

The Mustard Seed helps improve the lives of those experiencing poverty by building community growing hope and supporting change. Through enhanced visibility relationship building and community engagement Street Level strives to make the 102 Community Impact Centre a safe and welcoming environment for guests donors and volunteers. Street Level will provide an identifiable and visible presence within the building that optimizes safety builds relationships and values people.

Employment Type: Casual
Schedule: Flexible schedule with no guaranteed hours (may include day evening and weekends)
Reporting to: Site Lead
City: Calgary
Location: Mustard Seed 102 Building (flexibility to work at other CIC locations required)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise 102 Building access the receipt of donations and the coordinating and loading of the shuttle bus service from or to the Foothills shelter.
  • Monitor guest activities within the 102 Support Centre and around The Mustard Seed buildings providing crisis intervention as required.
  • Providing an enhanced visible presence throughout the buildings perceiving and responding to opportunities that will optimize safety and build community.
  • Collaborate with guest to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through supportive relationships and day to day interactions.
  • Greet and ensure donors are treated with excellence and appreciation.
  • Assist with onsite Food Services programs as needed.
  • Attend meetings and training as assigned.
  • Keep all client information confidential.
  • Abide by all Health and Safety protocols and procedures (ex. incident reports near misses) and mandatory training courses (NVCI safeTalk First Aid).
  • Required to abide by all Health & Safety protocols including completing a report for all incidents that occur including near misses in a timely manner.
  • Provide on-call support to Community Impact Centre whenever is needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma preferred.
  • Front line experience in Security or Social Services considered an asset.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Strong desire to work with a marginalized population.
  • Good relationship building and communication skills.
  • Some knowledge of mental illness and addictions.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office computer applications.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team.
  • Desire to serve in a Christian ministry.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The position requires a flexible schedule with shifts occurring in the evening or on weekends.
  • This position will require working inside and outside in various climates.
  • The position involves moderate levels of physical effort including but not limited to standing for long periods walking climbing stairs bending lifting and pushing donation carts.
  • This position requires focused mental effort including but not limited to adapting to an often fast-paced environment operating a computer using two-way radio communications perceiving and quickly responding to crises within and around the buildings.
  • May be exposed to or required to respond to drug poisoning and other verbal or physical incidents.
  • Navigating interactions with challenging clients who may exhibit unpredictable behavior including swearing anger and the possibility of becoming aggressive
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behavior up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
    • Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
