This letter is to invite you to participate in the Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Hiring process which will be held in Jackson WY on June 19-20 2025. This document will provide information about the process for the following tested positions: Firefighter/EMT Firefighter/EMT-Intermediate and Firefighter/Paramedic.
Jackson Hole Fire/EMS is a progressive all hazards fire and EMS department with a proud and rich history serving Teton County Wyoming. After reviewing many applications our hiring committee has selected you as one of candidates being invited to test.
Candidates that score higher than 70% on their total score will be eligible to be placed on a hiring list for positions within this department. The effective period of the eligibility list shall be a period of one (1) year from the effective date of the hiring list.

Prior to hire a candidate must pass a pre-employment physical exam and criminal background check.
Testing Schedule:
June 19 & 20 Testing: 3 Components Written Test Practical Scenarios Oral Board Interview
Candidates who arrive late for any selection component shall be immediately disqualified unless a verifiable emergency situation occurs.
On or about June 27:
Candidates scores from the hiring process will be provided to the candidates by mail or email.
Scoring:
Candidates will be ranked by composite score. The composite score is the sum of the points obtained by an individual in each examination component. Maximum composite score is 100 points.
Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic Scores
Application (Experience & Education) 20% (not tested)
Written Test 20%
Practical Scenarios 30%
Oral Board Interview score 30%
Examination/Testing process:
1. Experience & Education Points:
An applicant comparison form will be used to score applications based on experience and educational components and may include additional preferred criteria.
2. Written Examination:
The written test assesses knowledge of the Firefighter/EMT level. Composed of 80-100 questions candidates will have a maximum of 2 hours to complete. Test questions will be developed from the following sources:
i. IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting 7th Edition
ii. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Mission Vision and Values Statements see the Department Website Admin tab.

iv. Operational Protocols Policies and Guidelines Department website Admin Tab
Division 14 Emergency Response (All)

3. Practical Scenarios
There will be one (1) Structure Fire Scenario and (1) EMS Scenario. The Structure Fire Scenario will be based off NFPAEdition job performance requirements found here. The EMS scenario will be based on operational protocols referenced above and the 2016 edition NREMT skill sheets here. PDF versions available upon request.
4. Oral Board Interview Points:
A panel of no more than five (5) individuals representing diverse experience will participate in conducting a structured interview process. Each evaluator will score the candidates individually based on identified competencies associated with the position. A compilation of evaluator scores will be used to rank each candidate.
Eligibility Lists:
Upon completion of the testing components the candidates scoring higher than 70% will be ranked in the order of their standing and their names placed on a hiring list. The effective period of the eligibility list shall be a period of one (1) year from the effective date of the hiring list.
The Fire Chief may select any of the three (3) standing highest on the hiring list for selection to the rank for which the candidate has competed. The Fire Chief will consider attitude work ethic residency seniority in the department (date of hire) seniority in rank (date promoted) and highest score.
Posting and Notification of Examination Results:
The final results of the hiring process will be provided to the Fire Chief and Human Resources for their records. An email will be sent to each candidate providing them a copy of their final ranking and individual component scores. Results will be provided within 14 days of the completion of the examination/testing process.
All final ranking results (by position) will be good for 12 months from the day the written examination was administered. The eligibility pool list will be good until midnight of June 19 2026 unless this list is exhausted.
At the expiration of the effective period of the hiring list all right of priority under the list shall terminate twelve (12) months after the list is established or when no candidates remain in the pool. Any candidates in the pool at the time of expiration must successfully participate in subsequent hiring/promotional testing processes to be re-entered into the hiring pool or placed on a hiring list.
Interview with Fire Chief:
Once the list of candidates has been forwarded to the Fire Chief the Fire Chief will retain the ability to perform a final interview prior to the hiring decision.

Travel and lodging expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant.
