Job Description

Job Title: Behavioral Interventionist Assistant

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Department: Special Education Department

Reports To: Special Education Department Principal and Teacher(s) assigned

Approved By: Board of Trustees

SUMMARY:

Provide assistance to student(s) with behavior and/or physical challenges as assigned by Special Education Department. Assist in implementation of classroom programs including self-help behavior management and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher and special education department administration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support

  1. Help teacher keep student records of behavior and physical progress as needed.
  2. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers and corresponding staff working with assigned student(s) regarding student interventions.
  3. Participate in the development implementation and evaluation of behavior management program of assigned student(s).
  4. Receive applicable background information of assigned student(s) for the purpose of implementing appropriate behavior intervention activities.
  5. Implement the behavior intervention plan and assigned accommodations for the purpose of providing behavior intervention based on individualized needs of the student(s).

Student Management

  1. Assist students with behavior and/or physical challenges according to their needs including implementing CPI strategies positive behavioral supports and/or transferring student(s) to and from wheelchairs lifting or positioning.
  2. Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  3. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each students special medical physical communicative and emotional needs.
  4. Work with individual students or small groups to develop appropriate social skills
  5. Conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher to assigned student(s) when time allows.
  6. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  7. Relocate to different campus/setting if necessary to continue implementing interventions of assigned student(s).

Other

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  3. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED

Completed 48 college credit hours

Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Some experience working with children

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

Certification as required by the Texas Education Agency

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one small group situations to students and staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work with children with disabilities. Knowledge of and ability to use wheelchair lift ramps personal computer copier typewriter and audiovisual equipment. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize and follow procedures when disruptive abusive or dangerous behavior occurs. Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies applied behavioral analysis developmental emotional and behavioral disabilities. Knowledge of non-violent verbal and physical intervention techniques. Knowledge of first-aid skills. Ability to perform; duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand walk sit talk and hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; climb or balance. Stooping kneeling crouching crawling and lifting is required of this employee. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment. The employee may be prone to physical contact by the assigned student(s) during challenging student behaviors that may lead to injury.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts in some vocational settings. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may experience exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
