JOB TITLE: Head Choir Director - High School

REPORTS TO:Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PAY GRADE:Classroom Teacher Salary Scale

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The High School Head Choir Director is responsible for teaching an overview of musical elements and styles to beginning students for teaching vocal techniques and choral skills to the choir students and for providing curricular opportunities for use of the learned skills in keeping with the District philosophies procedures policies and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate

Preferred:

  • Three years teaching and choir directing experience

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of overall operation of vocal music program
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing choir and extracurricular activities
  • Ability to interpret policy procedures and data
  • Strong communication public relations and interpersonal skills

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinates with the Director of Performing and Visual Arts to develop a curriculum for the Choral Music Program consistent with District guidelines.
    • Teaches general music courses which offer singing listening music reading and creative activities.
    • Teaches vocal music through girls choir mixed choir sight-reading ear training individual and ensemble work as well as preparation of performances.
    • Encourages respect for and enjoyment of public performance and stresses good sportsmanship in competition.
    • Plans effective evaluation of and record keeping for student performance.

  • Organizes performances and curricular activities for the choral music program.
    • Plans and schedules concerts seasonal programs entertainment at assembly programs and competitive events in cooperation with the building calendar.
    • Schedules and oversees rehearsals for productions and competitive events.
    • Arranges transportation and chaperones for activities as needed.

  • Assumes responsibility for administration of the choral music program.
    • Plans the use of budgeted funds and activity funds.
    • Requisitions supplies as needed.
    • Oversees the selection and care of uniforms.
    • Maintains accurate inventory record of equipment and uniforms.
    • Demonstrates appropriate standards for citizenship sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
    • Remains current in the field of choral music through professional organizations literature workshops and in-service programs.
    • Coordinates activities with the booster club and serves as a liaison between the booster club and school administration.
    • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.

  • Complies with the position description of the classroom teacher.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility standing prolonged sitting some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
