POSITION TITLE: School Service Worker
EXEMPTION STATUS:NonExempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Federal Programs
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10.5 months
Primary Purpose
This is a State Compensatory Education funded position providing compensatory intensive and/or accelerated instruction and services to students identified as atrisk. Provide assistance for students and their families to remove barriers in school readiness success and attendance.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Bachelors Degree with emphasis in criminal justice social work education or related field
Special Knowledge/Skills
Awareness and ability to access community agencies and organizations
Ability to operate personal computer and perform word processing
Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team
Ability to advocate for parents and children to enhance their wellbeing and education
Strong organizational communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
Ability to speak read and write Spanish preferred
Experience
Experience working with atrisk and/or adjudicated youth their families schools and community agencies
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Service to Students and Families
- Conduct home visits and compile information to assist in the development of an intervention plan for students and parents to improve attendance and make school a positive learning experience.
- Assist staff with an individualized instruction plan by ensuring assignments and documents are completed.
- Assist in obtaining signatures on a variety of documents including but not limited to: language proficiency assessment committee limited English proficiency special education and lunch applications.
- Maintain average daily attendance by monitoring daily absence report visiting homes making calls sending letters and filing truancy if necessary.
- Provide motivational support for successful completion of student goals and opportunities by encouraging student participation in extracurricular activities and recruit volunteers to serve as mentors.
- Assist in developing activities designed to involve parents in the school and community.
- Link families to community service agencies to address homelessness and other issues; inform and ensure that all available district resources are being utilized; and assist in completing documents for: health insurance programs temporary aide public housing government programs and continued education.
- Translate and/or provide transportation to ensure attendance at a variety of school meetings including but not limited to: ARD LEP LPAC alternative placements and expulsion hearings and campus conferences.
- Provide transportation to ensure compliance with a variety of medical appointments and transport sick students to the home or other site as determined by parents.
- Assist in providing clothing shoes school supplies and hygiene items to meet academic standards.
- Dispense medication on campus as needed.
- Deliver assignments supplies medications and progress checks to other campuses.
- Provide translation assistance during alternative placement intakes and ensure daily attendance if needed.
- Conduct classroom visits upon administrators request in reference to attendance behavior and academics.
Consultation
- Serve as a student advocate and contact person between the school and the home.
- Work with the local mental health agency in resolving emotional personal and social problems that effect school attendance and performance by scheduling appointments transporting to/from doctor and counseling sessions and obtaining medication.
- Work in conjunction with the juvenile justice system in addressing juvenile delinquency and provide transportation to court hearings when necessary.
Communication
- Communicate concerns between parents and the school.
- Present a positive image of the school to students and parents.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information.
