Upper School Associate Teacher Biology and Science Laboratory Manager

August 2025 June 2027

The Position

We seek an enthusiastic associate teacher in Upper School Biology to join our science team. This teacher will also have duties in the biology and chemistry labs as a lab manager to support the coursework. All associate teacher roles are twoyear positions. Associate Teachers participate in the Innovative Teacher Program (ITP) a twoyear program designed to provide classroom teaching experience mentorship and professional development opportunities for new and developing teachers. This role begins August 2025 and runs through June of theschool year. It is a fulltime position with a competitive salary and full benefits.

The ideal candidate will have significant interest and experience in the field and be excited to work with upper school students. Experience working with youth and an interest in gifted students is preferred. In addition they will have interest in engaging with learning about and supporting innovative researchbased pedagogy labbased and handson coursework and differentiated instruction.

As an associate teacher this person will work with a mentor teacher in developing and teaching courses. Associates teach and work with students collaborate with other teachers build curriculum and reflect upon their practice. Associate Teachers also act independently regularly exercising discretion and independent judgement in the performance of their teaching duties. In addition Associate Teachers attend professional development workshops as part of a yearlong curriculum to explore current topics in teaching and learning.

When required by the schools staffing needs this associate teacher will also have the opportunity to leadteach one section of Biology 101 (with an according adjustment in salary to reflect the increased responsibilities).

In the Upper School Laboratory Manager capacity approximately a quarter of this role this person will spend a portion of each week working in our biology and chemistry labs preparing and ordering laboratory materials helping design lab experiences and managing a group of student lab technicians as they prepare materials clean and inventory supplies. The ideal candidate will have significant wet lab work experience.

Associate Teachers are members of the Nueva community of educators one defined by collaboration inquiry reflection and lifelong learning. All our educators participate in all aspects of school life including serving as coadvisors preparing parentteacher conferences chaperoning school trips and attending faculty meetings and school events. During their second year Associate Teachers develop a teaching portfolio and receive support in applying for positions and/or graduate school building a resume and preparing for interviews.

  • Participate actively in other aspects of the student experience and school functioning: chaperoning trips and events serving on committees and developing new programs at the school

PositionSpecific Responsibilities

  • Assist in teaching Upper School Biology courses under mentor teacher guidance
  • Potentially leadteach one section of Biology 101 as needed
  • Help manage and offer continued training for our crew of student lab technicians who provide preparatory cleaning maintenance and inventory support to the lab spaces.
  • Order laboratory materials for biology and chemistry labs and maintain financial records of all orders; collaborate with the Department Chair to steward the Science Department budget
  • Design and support lab experiences alongside mentor teachers
  • Maintain inventory and organize supplies in chemistry and biology laboratories as needed
  • Make solutions and prepare other supplies (e.g. agar plates) for biology and chemistry lab work as needed
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness in lab spaces
  • Coordinate with other lab managers to ensure smooth laboratory operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required advanced university degree in Biology or related field preferred
  • Teaching experience at high school and/or university level preferred enthusiasm for working with teens required
  • Wet lab experience including preparation of materials for biology and chemistry experiments
  • Experience with husbandry of model organisms (bacteria C. elegans fruit flies) a plus
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity diversity and inclusion

  • Flexibility and creativity in working in a dynamic environment

Compensation

The fulltime salary range for this faculty position is from $60700 to $77600. The starting salary is based upon but not limited to several factors that include type and years of creditable experience education level and expertise.
