Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a fulltime Transportation Coordinator (12month position) with our Student Transportation department.
Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division Central Services is comprised of eight departments in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive Communication Services Facility Services Student Transportation Human Resources Financial Services Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Route Management
- Under the direction of Senior Planners assist with route optimization.
- Analyze/determine bus stops as per administrative procedures.
- Attend transfer sites to ensure safety scheduling and efficiency.
- Monitor and confirm route paths and student scanning using GPS software.
- Troubleshoot system malfunctions and liaise between Tech Services and Traversa support.
- Provide bus schedules to parents including changes to routes.
- Validate address information for transportation requests.
- Update and maintain student data.
Complaints Discipline and Equipment
- Investigate complaints and advise Senior Planner. Complete written supporting documentation of the resolution and inform all stakeholders.
- Transport students to school or home who must be removed from the bus because of disciplinary issues and/or safety concerns.
- Ride bus routes to monitor student and bus operator behaviour patterns.
- View archive and transfer videos for School Administration to view.
- Ensure all fleet equipment (GPS student scanners video Child Checkmate radio) is functioning properly. Arrange for repairs/replacement and new installs as required.
- Program GPS and Geotab data upon installation.
- Override vehicle assignments and notify key stakeholders in instances of delayed cancelled or spare buses.
- Verify invoices for goods and services provided in relation to equipment installation repairs and new orders.
- Assist Bus Contractors with utilizing the Traversa program.
Bus Operator/Student Support
- Communicate effectively with school bus operators.
- Provide guidance via twoway radio.
- Review Alberta GovernmentMandated Route Assessments with bus operators address safety concerns and escalate significant concerns to the Safety and Compliance Coordinator or Senior Planner.
- Organize and supervise annual bus evacuation practices at school locations.
- Provide advice and guidance to Bus Operators in order to adhere to EIPS policies and procedures.
- Attend bus accident sites and provide support to Safety and Compliance Coordinator.
- Instruct Little Elk Island Adventure Program to kindergarten students.
- Assist during inclement weather including checking road conditions and/or bus cancellations.
- Assist in bus route coverage
Office Support
- Effectively communicate with stakeholders (parents students bus operators contractors school staff and the general public) via phone and email.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
- Degree or Diploma in a related field or equivalent experience
The following Education requirements would be considered an asset the successful candidate may obtain these during employment:
- Class 2 License with Sendorsement condition
- Emergency First Aid Certification
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years experience in Student Transportation.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES
- Working knowledge of routing software (Traversa or equivalent) is an asset
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to remain calm and act decisively in emergency situations
- Adjust rapidly to changes and tempo of work activity in order to multitask effectively due to frequent interruptions
- Strong leadership skills
- Proficient with Office365 (Word Excel SharePoint)
- Ability to interact and engage well with children
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
- Clear understanding of the policies regulations and procedures governing Student Transportation
- Understanding of the functionality of equipment (GPS video surveillance student scanning safety harnesses twoway radio child checkmate)
DECISION MAKING
- Make routine bus route changes in adherence to policy and procedures with consideration to student safety and providing a high level of service
- Decide on a plan of action for the following instances:
- Breakdown/Delays (rescue bus transfer arrangements)
- Road closures (rerouting)
- Railway malfunctions (rerouting)
- Lost students
