What are we looking for
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our mechanical design team. The role will report directly to the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer.
Responsibilities
Represent the mechanical team at design reviews.
Aid the development of the mechanical team systems and processes in conjunction with the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer and Product Design Manager.
Be able to design plant layouts with parts assemblies GA drawings and industry standard customer deliverables.
Working with containerised products pipework pressure vessels pumps valves and other associates process equipment for plant design.
Assist the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer in coaching and mentoring Mechanical Design Engineers and Junior Design Engineers in the department giving help and guidance where necessary.
Assist the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer in checking drawings produced by Mechanical Design Engineers and Junior Design Engineers prior to final approval.
Assist the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer in approving drawings and be responsible for data management (PDM / Microsoft Dynamics).
About You
Knowledge and Experience
Successful delivery of design plant layout and document deliverables for several projects.
Have considerable experience using SolidWorks including PDM Vault operations and formation of automated workflows.
Strong knowledge of parametric modelling practices.
Have a solid understanding of bills of materials structures including properties used within Solidworks as well as part numbering systems.
Be able to produce manufacturing and assembly drawings including top level GA drawings with attention to detail on GD&T presentation and sufficient knowledge to challenge design decisions.
Have experience of designing pipe work systems including pumps valves and fittings. In addition good knowledge of fabrication design including welding sheet metal box section construction etc.
Fluid hydraulics comprehension including pressure drop appreciation and good practice design. Knowledge of pressure head flow velocity pump operation filtering & flow control etc.
Be educated to degree level or equivalent preferably in Mechanical Engineering with at least 8 years postgraduate experience with strong knowledge of pipework design and construction.
Ability to lead and coach junior design engineers and lead by example.
Line management including holiday planning timesheet administration and delegated resource management conflict resolution etc.
To support the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer in all activities to grow the knowledgebase best practice and continuous development principles of the mechanical design team.
To have the ability to build a strong rapport with surrounding stakeholders including stakeholder management and be customer facing when required.
Methodical approach to problem solving from mechanical first principles regarding Solidworks software as well as root cause analysis and improvement initiatives. To be able to demonstrate understanding and communication of these solutions. Analytical mind set.
Ability to look at forensic evidence on failed components and determine probable failure modes. FMEA comprehension.
Understanding of business management systems including practicalities of due process.
Ability to communicate well in all environments around the company.
Strong understanding of change note applications and implications including the administration of nonconformances.
Strong time management skills including prioritisation management.
To be able to support the suppliers with manufacturing queries as well as shop floor staff with drawing and design queries.
To be able to evaluate parts and processes for cost efficiency and reliability.
PED & ATEX.
Design of steel pipework as well as plastic pipework and mechanical understanding.
Demonstrable experience working with PFDs and P&IDs schematics components and routing.
Knowledge of pressure temperature flow and level variables and instrumentation to measure or control these.
Various commercial software e.g. PDS PDMS SP3D E3D AutoCAD Solidworks
Knowledge of vessels pumps and heat exchanger performance.
Highly advantageous
To have a working knowledge of pressure equipment pressure vessels and the PED.
To have a working knowledge of product design and compliance with the machinery directive and creating product design specifications.
Experience of stress analysis and proving calculations including FEA packages.
To have familiarity with the ATEX directives and hazardous area classifications.
To have familiarity with a manufacturing environment including BOMs and MRP.
Strong knowledge of ISO / ASME codes for process and plant construction applications.
Working knowledge of compliance zoning and building legislation.
Chemical petrochemical or hydrocarbon industry experience.
