Job Description: 6th Grade Field School Teacher

Job Summary:

The 6th Grade Field School Teacher will have a passion for the outdoors a strong background in environmental education and the ability to engage and inspire young learners in an outdoor setting. This role involves planning and delivering handson experiential learning activities that align with curriculum standards and promote environmental stewardship. This position will primarily be responsible for teaching Math Social Studies and outdoor learning.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Education or related field
• Michigan Teaching Certification in Elementary and/or Middle School
• Prior experience in coordinating or teaching outdoor education programs for elementary or middle school students.
• Strong knowledge of environmental science ecology and outdoor skills.
• Familiarity with academic standards and curriculum frameworks for first through sixth grade.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with teachers parents and external partners.
• Ability to adapt lessons and activities to meet the diverse needs and abilities of students.
• Knowledge of safety protocols and risk management strategies in outdoor settings.
• Passion for nature environmental stewardship and fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity in students.
• Ability to inspire and engage students in outdoor learning experiences.
• CPR and Wilderness First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends for field trips or special events.

Key Responsibilities:

• Curriculum Development and Implementation:
  • Design and implement engaging outdoor education programs and lesson plans for 6thgrade students.
  • Align activities with state and national education standards focusing on mathematics social studies and environmental studies.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary approaches including math language arts and social studies into outdoor learning experiences.

• Instruction and Facilitation:
  • Lead outdoor field trips nature walks and other experiential learning activities.
  • Use diverse teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
  • Foster a safe inclusive and supportive learning environment.
• Student Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Assess student performance through observations projects and written assignments.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and participation.
• Classroom Management:
  • Implement effective behavior management strategies to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students during outdoor activities.
  • Manage logistics for outdoor trips including transportation equipment and safety protocols.
• Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with fellow teachers administrators and support staff to coordinate curriculum and activities.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress and upcoming events.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in outdoor and environmental education.

Terms:

• This position follows the Northview Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Annual evaluation of the 6th Grade Field School Teacher is conducted by the principal of Highlands Middle School.
