Job Description

FullTime Shelter Lead Staff

The CARITAS Emergency Shelter operates with the assistance of community support to provide shelter and a pathway to housing for our most vulnerable citizens. Our Mens and Womens Shelter Programs comprise the largest adult emergency shelter in the area providing 50% of the beds to men and women experiencing homelessness in the Richmond area. This position provides supervision in a shelter environment. In this role you will support housing first efforts of shelter staff to provide assistance and structure for individuals facing a housing crisis.

Position Summary:

  • Provide direct supervision of emergency shelter and ensure safety of participants.
  • Compassionately enforce program guidelines and expectations.
  • Engage with participants in a personcentered trauma informed manner.
  • Complete new intakes and update data entry.
  • Oversee daily shelter events and participant onsite appointments.
  • Manage onsite volunteers.
  • Provide support for participants in engaging their housing plan.
  • Implement deescalation techniques.
  • Use Google Workspace to manage all shelter documents appointments and trackers.
  • Send shift reports to Shelter team with all important information.
  • Follow staff expectations for each shift.
  • Attend monthly staff trainings and weekly staff meetings.
  • Serve as a fill in for shifts if all other options have been exhausted.
  • Rotating holiday coverage.

Qualifications:

  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Ability to work well with program participants and other shelter staff.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and deescalation methods.
  • Skilled in trauma informed care.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Valid T.B. test within 2 weeks of being hired.
  • Current CPR certification required within 1 month of being hired.

Supervisor: This fulltime nonexempt position (overtime available) reporting to the Emergency Shelter Program Manager.

Hours: 8hour shifts 4pm12am and 12am8am

Location: 2220 Stockton Street Richmond VA 23224
