QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters Degree in School Counseling from an accredited educational institution.
- Certified as a school counselor.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a school counselor.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of school counseling techniques and referral process. Ability to coordinate the implementation of the Comprehensive School Counseling Plan. Knowledge of community resources. Ability to identify staff development needs and coordinate training and informational meetings. Knowledge of testing and measurement. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Possess computer skills for data entry and retrieval. Ability to interact with a wide variety of people including students parents agency and school personnel. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with counselors on Policy 2315 (Comprehensive School Counseling Program) and Policy 2520.19 (WVCRDSSS) which includes:
- Mission and vision statements
- Comprehensive School Counselor Plan
- West Virginia College and Career Dispositions and Standards for Student Success and ASCA Standards
- Advisory Councils
- Principals Agreements
- Counselor Logs
- Ensure that all schools turn in a Comprehensive School Counseling Program (CSCP) each year.
- Provide feedback on each schools CSCP each year.
- Ensure that all school counselors complete and turn in a West Virginia School Counseling Program Assessment each year.
- Organize and plan monthly meetings for both secondary and primary counselors to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
- Plan and facilitate collaboration meetings at each level to foster teamwork and coordination among counselors.
- Ensure that counselors are aware of the required trainings they must provide to students each year and facilitate access to these trainings.
- Work with coordinator of internship programs and secure placements for school counselor interns providing them with practical experience and support in their professional development.
- Partner with the Behavioral Health Coordinator TMI and other agencies to provide resources for counselors.
- Create and maintain a central location with essential documents and information for counselors.
- Attends various meetings and conferences including:
- State Counselors Meetings (monthly)
- State WVEIS Counselor Meetings (monthly)
- State Counselors Conferences
- State Counselor Director Meetings
- ASCA Director Meetings
- Maintains and updates spreadsheets including:
- Counselor Locations
- Counselor Time Spent in Each School
- Counselor Hire Dates
- List Serves (annual updates)
- Provides counselors with information from the state such as FAFSA Promise and CFWV.
- Development implementation and maintenance of the Program of Studies ensuring that it remains current relevant and aligned with Policy 2510 and WVEIS guidelines.
- Will work collaboratively with various stakeholders including Rumsey to ensure accuracy and consistency across all programs and courses.
- Assists Executive Director of Secondary Schools with policy and procedures relating to high school.
- Cover all academic and curricular information that counselors need to know each year including:
- Graduation Requirements
- Coordinate with CTE Director to provide CTE Program Information
- PEP Plan
- Mountaineer Challenge
- Option Pathway
- Other Academic and Curricular Updates
- Provide orientation training and support for new school counselors.
- Work with all Dual Credit programs.
- Work with WVEIS coordinator to provide codes for all BCS approved dual credit courses.
- Work with Executive Director of Transportation to provide buses for each high school to all Blue Ridge Jump Start programs on two campuses.
- Work with Blue Ridge on start/end/vacation days for students and communicate these to all stakeholders including Executive Director of Transportation.
- Work with Blue Ridge Education program to provide placements for students to get practicum hours.
- Work with Shepherd Universitys Upward Bound Program.
- Help to ensure maximum number of students for the Upward Bound Program.
- Provide books and/or Chromebooks and transportation to Upward Bound students for the summer program.
- Help school counselors with scheduling issues.
- Verify/Translate transcripts as necessary (outofstate students foreign transcripts Home School students transcripts etc.) and work with Executive Director or Technology and WVEIS coordinator on Parchment.
- Serve on scholarship committees and direct the BCS Scholarship Committee.
- Maintain the Senior Guide each year.
- Communicate appropriate changes in legislation to school counselors.
- Collaborate with other departments.
- Participate in workshops and training for professional growth.
- Represent the department on district and/or community committees as appropriate or assigned.
- Respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
- Keep well informed about current trends and best practices in areas of responsibility.
- Assist in implementing the districts goals and strategic commitments.
- Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.
- Facilitate problem solving by individuals or groups.
- Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- Maintain expertise in assigned areas to fulfill project goals and objectives.
- Use appropriate styles and methods to motivate gain commitment and facilitate task accomplishment
- Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the districts approved compensation plan. 261day contract of employment shall be established by the district.
