Job Description

Type of Appointment: Full Time Probationary

Job Classification:Operating System Analyst

Anticipated Hiring Range: $8500 $9583 per month

Work Schedule:Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.


THE DEPARTMENT:

The mission of the IT&IP Division is to provide stewardship leadership and service in support of the teaching and learning mission of the university. IT&IP provides learning technologies strategies leadership and support all of which enhance teaching learning the quality of the student experience personal productivity and administrative effectiveness. The Cloud and Support Services department provides central technology support for the design development security and maintenance of campuswide computing infrastructure including: email web services intranet services directory services account management for technology access as well as various server operating system environments and databases including UNIX Linux and Windows for the support of campus applications such as PeopleSoft Blackboard CBORD Odyssey Oracle and network management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oracle Database Administration

  • Ensure campus Oracle databases are managed and maintained in a reliable and secure manner and comply with campus standards for security
  • Research plan coordinate and install new releases of Oracle database software and critical patch updates (CPUs) in both nonproduction and production databases working with other technical staff (DBAs developers and server administrators) and functional contacts.
  • Participate in teams to plan develop and execute database disaster recovery plans including regularly scheduled backup recovery procedures to ensure data integrity.
  • Execute regular data integrity analysis on databases and application systems using predefined processes. Make appropriate action plans based on results for management review.
  • Plan and implement new Oracle databases including the related supporting mechanisms such as requesting backup configuration integrity checks monitoring etc.
  • Stay current on Oracle enhancements and related supporting technologies and make recommendations for improvement areas to management. Incumbent may be required to respond to inquiries from staff outside of normal business hours in support of campus operations.

Planning Coordinating and Project Support

  • Provide support for campus projects relying on Oracle databases and related infrastructure
  • Participate in planning new developments releases upgrades or implementation projects including developing and maintaining project plans in coordination with other team participants; responding to project issues; collaborating with other project participants in accomplishing tasks; communicating issues to management and other project participants to ensure resolution.
  • Provide Oracle assistance to campus technical and functional staff who are maintaining or troubleshooting applications or processes. Interpret information to perform root cause analysis. Prepare recommendations and documentation regarding the results of the analysis.
  • Gather functional requirements of proposed projects to understand the data classification being stored database design and storage requirements. Document the needs and ensure the database design meets campus standards for securing sensitive data.
  • Communication and coordination of maintenance support and changes to the Oracle infrastructure in a distributed environment across a diverse audience including: technical staff (DBAs developers server administrators) functional departments and IT&IP management to plan changes identify issues and to mitigate unintended service impacts.
  • Assist with technical testing in a distributed environment to ensure endtoend testing across interdepartmental groups. Provide technical expertise to developers and endusers to ensure comprehensive testing. Document and communicate results of testing. Track issues to resolution.
  • Ensure adequate documentation for ongoing support and maintenance with all involved parties.

Performance and Security Monitoring

  • Evaluate level of systems operation and recommend measures to improve overall performance and security.
  • Monitor and maintain the Oracle infrastructure for trends (usage performance growth etc.) to ensure longterm stability and maintainability of the Oracle infrastructure and related services.
  • Provide ongoing performance and security analysis for databases and database operational environment.
  • Utilize database performance and monitoring tools for the database environment.
  • Maintain data confidentiality integrity and availability by implementing security policy and management guidelines including database encryption using Oracle Transparent Database Encryption (TDE) and other technologies.

Cloud Infrastructure Support

  • Evaluate and support the campus cloud migration plan by evaluating and recommending technologies and strategies for databases that can be migrated to cloud hosting providers:
  • Assess the needs of individual databases and make recommendations to management about which databases would support migration to cloud hosting environments particularly Amazon AWS RDS.
  • Understand and communicate the benefits and design decision points for migrating Oracle workloads to a cloud environment and communicate those to other IT staff and management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions. Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education training and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems solving a wide range of problems and developing practicable and thorough solutions and using effective communication and listening skills.
  • Providing technical support to technical and nontechnical users including involvement in significant projects involving core enterpriselevel infrastructure and/or services.
  • Experience in supporting Oracle databases and related applications running in a Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Oracles network transport protocols and other associated networking protocols.
  • Experience with utilizing backup technologies in an Oracle environment to insure recoverability of Oracle databases and systems including the use of RMAN.
  • Experience and knowledge of maintaining the security of Oracle databases including the use of firewalls Oracle Transparent Data Encryption etc.
  • Experience with common scripting languages used in a Linux Oracle environment such as shell scripts Oracle PL/SQL JAVA Perl etc.
  • Ability to work in a team to debug complex technical problems with modern database management systems applications and networks.
  • Ability to interact with others and to communicate technical information to both technical and nontechnical users.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Oracle and/or AWS certifications Experience working in an academic environment
  • Experience with the following: Amazon Web Services MSSQL MySQL and/or MariaDB Linux OS management

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on theCSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on theCSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5158 and maximum $12730 per month. University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3.
