Job Description

The University of Saint Mary is conveniently located a short 30 minutes drive from Parkville Shawnee Basehor and Kansas City Kansas. USM serves about 1400 students at its main campus in Leavenworth its satellite location in Overland Park as well as online.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Division of Humanities and Liberal Arts seeks a fulltime faculty member to teach for the USM Prison Education Program. The successful candidate will have experience teaching composition communications and literature at the college level. Experience in prison education is a plus. Experience with students of diverse backgrounds and firstgeneration college students is required. Candidates must be credentialed in the area of instruction and must be able to pass a background check.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach writing and rhetoric proficiency in foundational courses (generally remedial English English Composition 1 and English Composition 2 courses).
  • Teach a general education communications course or public speaking and literature courses as needed
  • Present material effectively through diverse teaching methods.
  • Teach 24credit hours across 9 months with ability to teach during the day and/or evenings five days a week.
  • Teach in person courses within multiple male prisons


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold a Masters degree in the discipline for the courses being taught or a Masters degree plus 18 graduate credits in the discipline being taught. Ph.D preferred.
  • 35 years of higher education teaching experience
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Work experience that demonstrates proficiency in working with first generation students and/or incarcerated students is preferred.
  • Commitment to prison rehabilitation
  • Philosophy aligned with the mission and values of USM
  • Ability to pass Department of Corrections background check and remain authorized for entry into the correctional facility
  • 18 or more graduate hours in Communication
