JOB TITLE: Middle School Alternative Education Teacher (Grades 68)

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator/Director of Alternative Education

FTE: 1.0

GENERAL DUTIES SUMMARY:

The Middle School Alternative Education Teacher serves students in grades 68 who demonstrate a broad range of academic behavioral and socialemotional needs. This position is rooted in traumainformed practices culturally responsive instruction and restorative approaches to behavior. The teacher is responsible for delivering core content instruction (English Language Arts Math Science and Social Studies) creating elective experiences implementing Tier 3 intensive behavioral and academic interventions and fostering a classroom environment that promotes belonging accountability and growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruction and Curriculum
    • Plan deliver and adapt instruction across all core content areas aligned to state standards and individualized student needs within a selfcontained classroom environment.
    • Integrate socialemotional learning (SEL) culturally relevant pedagogy and traumainformed practices into daily instruction.
    • Utilize academic and behavioral data to adjust instruction and interventions for student success.
    • Effectively incorporate educational technology for instruction and maintenance of student records
  • Classroom Culture and Behavior Intervention
    • Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Restorative Practices and deescalation strategies.
    • Create a learning environment that emphasizes safety connection equity and personal responsibility.
    • Collaborate with behavioral specialists counselors and school teams to implement behavior support plans and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Student Support and Collaboration
    • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support students academic progress emotional growth and social development.
    • Provide ongoing communication and partnership with families and caregivers to support student success.
    • Attend and contribute to student support meetings (e.g. IEPs 504s MTSS).
  • Professionalism and Growth
    • Participate in staff meetings professional learning communities (PLCs) and districtled professional development.
    • Contribute to schoolwide planning and improvement efforts focused on equitable outcomes for all students.
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress attendance and discipline according to district policies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Valid Oregon Teaching Licensewhich allows for core credit in one or more content areas
  • Demonstrated experience teaching students with Tier 3 intensive complex behavioral and academic needs
  • Experience with behavior intervention models traumainformed classroom management and effective use of deescalation strategies
  • Skilled in differentiating instruction and using data to drive educational decisions
  • Valid Oregon Drivers License and transportation for travel during the work day.

Preferred:

  • Reading Endorsement (at least one team member must possess this endorsement)
  • Special Education Endorsement (at least one team member must possess this endorsement)
  • Legacy Middle School Endorsement
  • Experience in alternative or therapeutic educational settings
  • Bilingual/bicultural candidates strongly encouraged to apply

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.
  • Abilit to maintain flexible schedule including occasional evenings for family outreach or professional responsibilities.
  • Travel between district/community sites may be required.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between TigardTualatin School District 23J and Tigard Tualatin Education Association.
