Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is a premier academic medical center located in the heart of Richmond. Accounting for almost half of VCUs sponsored research the School of Medicine is internationally recognized for patient care and education.

Position Summary:

The Program Manager for Pathways of Distinction for the MD programplays a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating the developmentimplementation and evaluation of Pathways of Distinction at the VCU School ofMedicine. The position will collaborate with the Office of Medical Education(OME) and faculty leaders to develop and deliver structured programming thatallow students to pursue indepth study in areas of personal and professionalinterest. These Pathways include longitudinal programming across a variety ofspecialty areas currently being delivered with the goal of expanding thecurrent Pathways to include additional programming. The Program Manager willensure that each Pathway is wellorganized aligns with institutional goalsand contributes to the development of a wellrounded medical professional.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Program Development and Coordination

  • Oversee the development implementation and refinement of Pathways of Distinction at the VCU School of Medicine ensuring alignment with institutional goals and educational objectives.
  • Collaborate with faculty administrators and students to identify areas of interest to enhance current programs and expand available program options.
  • Coordinate the implementation of newly developed Pathways of Distinction.
  • Collaborate with OME and faculty leadership to develop and document application processes and policies governing the Pathways of Distinction.
  • Develop and maintain a calendar of activities and requirements including but not limited to coursework mentoring electives and requirements that support each Pathways of Distinction.
  • Monitor national trends and emerging literature to ensure current and future programming is responsive to current and anticipated needs of the future physician workforce.

2. Student Support and Mentorship

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students enrolled in a Pathway of Distinction providing guidance resources and support for their professional development.
  • Collaborate with faculty and advisors to provide individualized support for students to ensure successful participation in their chosen Pathway of Distinction and monitor student progress ensuring successful participation and timely completion.
  • Facilitate mentoring opportunities for students participating in a Pathway by connecting them with appropriate faculty mentors and providing resources and support for effective mentoring relationships.
  • Organize workshops seminars and networking events that enhance the students experiences within their Pathway of Distinction.

3. Academic and Research Coordination

  • Work with faculty to develop and integrate opportunities for students to engage in research teaching and other scholarly activities within their Pathway of Distinction.
  • Support the development of research projects and academic presentations for students pursuing scholarshipfocused Pathways including identifying funding sources and opportunities for publication and presentation.
  • Coordinate and track student involvement in activities and requirements as part of the Pathways of Distinction ensuring alignment with learning objectives and program goals.

4. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage program logistics including student application processes track selection enrollment management and record keeping.
  • Track student progress within each Pathway of Distinction ensuring students meet academic and experiential requirements.
  • Coordinate regular evaluations and assessments of the Pathway programs to ensure continuous improvement and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the OME to manage the budget for the Pathways of Distinction.

5. Evaluation and Reporting

  • Collaborate with the OME Evaluation Team to develop and implement an evaluation strategy to assess the effectiveness of each Pathway of Distinction in meeting educational objectives.
  • Compile and analyze data on student outcomes track participation and faculty involvement.
  • Prepare regular reports on the status of Pathways of Distinction including successes challenges and recommendations for improvement.

6. Collaboration and Communication

  • Foster collaboration between the Office of Medical Education faculty and the broader medical school community to enhance the success of the Pathways of Distinction.
  • Communicate program goals updates and success stories through newsletters presentations and other channels.
  • Serve as a liaison between the OME students faculty and external partners to ensure alignment of track goals and institutional resources.

7. Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in education public health healthcare administration or related field.
  • Proven experience in academic program management preferably within a medical school or healthcare education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience developing implementing and evaluating educational or professional development programs.
  • Experience supporting student success and/or providing academic or career advising.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders including students faculty administrators and external partners.
  • Proficiency in data management analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively while also functioning effectively within a team.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree
  • Experience in medical education curriculum development or healthcare education.
  • Experience in administration in higher education.
  • Familiarity with the structure of medical school curricula.
  • Experience preparing or coordinating Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and familiarity with research compliance processes related to student and faculty scholarly activity.
