The Recreation Superintendent is a senior leadership role within the Parks and Recreation Department responsible for overseeing the planning coordination and execution of recreational programs and facility operations. This position combines strategic oversight with handson management of staff facilities and community engagement initiatives to enhance the quality of life for residents.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Administration
Serve as a key member of the departments senior management team.Assist in the development and implementation of the Parks & Recreation Master Plan.Lead and supervise recreation and maintenance staff including hiring training evaluating and coaching.Assist in the development and management of departmental budgets including operational and capital improvement expenditures.Develop and implement policies and procedures aligned with city goals and regulatory requirements.Represent the department at public meetings community events and interagency collaborations.Recreation Programming
Plan develop and oversee a wide range of recreational programs and special events.Coordinate with internal and external leagues for sports field scheduling and use.Promote programs through media press releases and community outreach.Have knowledge of rules and officiating mechanics.Have the ability to officiate games as required.Maintain accurate records and evaluations of recreational activities.Ensure safety and quality standards in all recreational offerings.Facility & Grounds Management
Oversee maintenance and operations of athletic fields aquatic facilities and recreational buildings.Inspect and maintain athletic fields irrigation systems and common grounds restroom and concession facilities.Supervise the use and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations.Seasonal maintenance including assisting with snow removal.Project & Strategic Management
Lead or support special projects including capital improvements and accreditation efforts.Conduct surveys analyze data and prepare proposals for new programs or services.Monitor and adjust chemical balances in aquatic facilities and maintain water quality reports.Coordinate with contractors and vendors for facility upgrades and maintenance.Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma or equivalentBachelors degree in Parks and Recreation Public Administration or related field; preferred.At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation including three (3) years in a supervisory role.Valid Kansas Drivers License.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and recreation management software.Preferred Qualifications
Experience in municipal or government settings.Project management and accreditation experience.Certifications in aquatic facility operations pesticide application or related areas.Skills and Competencies
Strong leadership communication and organizational skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities and solve problems independently.Knowledge of recreation programming and public administration.High attention to detail and commitment to service excellence.Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and community stakeholders.Physical and Work Environment Requirements
Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and perform physical tasks such as kneeling crawling and climbing.Work performed in both office and outdoor environments with exposure to weather extremes chemicals and noise.Availability to work evenings weekends and holidays as needed.This job description does not exclusively outline the duties expected of the employee in this role.
