Start your journey towards success!The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is currently accepting applications for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Supervisor I (Mechanic Supervisor I) at Troop B Garage!

This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY to NC Department of Public Safetys (DPS) current employees and eligible RIF candidates.

The primary purpose of the Mechanic Supervisor I position is to assist the Mechanic Supervisor II in supervising staff at State Highway Patrol Troop Bs Garage (and body shop). This position helps to schedule the work based on the amount of time needed for each job the availability of staff and type and urgency of repair. The Mechanic Supervisor I must ensure that repairs are completed in the most efficient manner possible focusing on quality maintenance and repair and giving maximum attention to safety.The work location is Clarkton NC (Bladen County).

Job duties include the following:

  • Assisting the Mechanic Supervisor II in assigning work to garage and body shop personnel; observing and assessing work providing feedback and providing technical supervision to employees.
  • Managing performance management process by communicating group performance standards to personnel in accordance with department policy.
  • Operating a computerized parts inventory and automobile preventive maintenance system using vehicle repair orders fuel tickets preventive maintenance data etc. to maintain an accurate vehicle repair history.
  • Providing technical assistance to garage and body shop personnel and monitoring progress of assigned work to minimize down time of vehicles.
  • Arranging surplus property purchases with individuals coordinating parts purchases with government agencies/vendors and working with insurance adjusters regarding estimates.
  • Transporting NCSHP and other vehicles using a rollback wrecker for a variety of purposes. (Special events new and old vehicles etc.).
This is a fulltime position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits including paid vacation paid sick leave paid holidays retirement and health insurance. Please note that this position may also require the occasional special assignment and/or weekend shift.Job duties for this position require driving/operating a state vehicle. A valid drivers license must be obtained by date of hire.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrols primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. NCSHP has more than 1600 troopers who cover nearly 80000 miles of North Carolina roadways more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the states traffic laws state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations reroute traffic around hazardous chemical spills and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. To qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

Management Preferences (Optional):These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Current NC Inspectors License.

Additional Requirement: An NC Inspectors License (as outlined in Sections 608 and 609 of the Clean Air Act) must be obtained within 12 months of hire date.


PLEASE NOTE: Recommended applicant(s) must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Background Investigation including a Drug Screening Test.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements


High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the repair of vehicles and/or equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
