The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources minimize flood risks and ensure the publics water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6million people in westcentral Florida as directed by state law.

Join our Land Resources Bureau

The Land Management Specialist is responsible for assisting the land managers in implementing land management initiatives on the Districts conservation lands totaling more than 460000 positions primary duties will focus on public recreational opportunities on the Districts conservation lands. This involves implementing recreation maintenance projects and regularly interacting with the public. The specialist will also be responsible for recording maintenance and recreation data in Land Managements database routinely participating on prescribed burns occasionally responding to wildfires with oversight per the request of the Florida Forest Service overseeing contractors and overseeing improvements to the Districts recreation program including campground and volunteer oversight.

Land Management Specialist 2 $38188.80 $43436.95
Land Management Specialist 3 $43347.20 $49289.45

The starting salary range for the Scientific Technician positionreflects the minimum to 25% of the compensation. The starting salary will be based on the education and experience of the successful candidate. The District conducts annual performance evaluations that may award applicable pay increases based on positive employee performance.

Essential Functions

  • Implement and oversee recreation maintenance projects to enhance public access and enjoyment of conservation lands.
  • Regularly interact with the public to provide information and address concerns related to land management and recreation.
  • Record maintenance and recreation data in Land Managements database to ensure accurate and uptodate records.
  • Implement improvements to the Districts recreation program to enhance visitor experience and promote conservation awareness.
  • Oversee campground operations and volunteer activities to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for visitors.
  • Implement strategic land management initiatives to manage and maintain District conservation lands.
  • Apply prescribed fire to manage vegetation and reduce wildfire risk.
  • Respond to wildfires as requested by the Florida Forest Service to protect District conservation lands and public safety.

Working Conditions

The position requires the ability to perform continuous repetitive tasks (to include keyboarding) with one or both hands. Frequently lifts and carries 10pound objects with an occasional requirement to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to occasionally squat. Must be able to operate a District vehicle with attached equipment for two hours or more at a time. May be exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity as well as a variety of pests including mosquitos and ticks. Must be able to occasionally bend squat climb crawl and swim and frequently reach above shoulder accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Satisfactory completion of a work capacity test is required within the first 6 months upon hire and every 2 years thereafter for employees to conduct fire management functions of Engine Crew Member and Line Crew Member. The test entails completing a onemile timed walk in sixteen minutes.

The District plays a critical emergency management role before during and afterEOC declared events and/or in conjunction with the overall emergency management strategy operations and recovery for the State of Florida. The employee therefore may be required to perform duties as assigned before during and after major storm events and emergency situations such as hurricanes wildfires or other declared emergencies. Such duties may include the employees normal work functions or other emergency support functions as determined necessary by the major storm or wildfire events this position couldtravel for extended hours or days.

Required Credentials for Land Management Specialist

Land Management Specialist 2

  • High School diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in natural resources conservation land management or related field OR Associates degree or higher and two (2) years experience in natural resources conservation land management or related field ORBachelors degree or higher in Natural Resource Conservation or related field
  • Must obtain a Basic Wildland Firefighter certification(S130/S190/L180) issued by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group within 6months of hire
  • Valid drivers license

Land Management Specialist 3

  • High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) years experience in natural resources conservation land management or related field OR Associates degree or higher and four (4) years experience in natural resources conservation land management or related field ORBachelors degree or higher in Natural Resource Conservation or related field and two (2) years experience in natural resources conservation land management or related field
  • Must obtain a Basic Wildland Firefighter certification(S130/S190/L180) issued by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group within 6months of hire
  • Valid drivers license

Preferred Credentials forLand Management Specialist

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Natural Resource Conservation or related field
  • Basic Wildland Fire Certification and experience participating on prescribed burns
  • Experience working with the public and recreationists on conservation lands
  • Experience utilizing mapping applications like Aveneza Maps onX Maps or ArcGIS Survey 123; Working knowledge of Floridas natural communities

Additional Details

The primary work location for this position is out of the Brooksville FL office. This position is eligible for overtime for hours worked over 40 hours in a week.
