Job Description

LEAD Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

Rowan Medicine an affiliate of Virtua Medical Group

Location: Mt. Laurel NJ

Department: Family Medicine

Summary:

Primary responsibility is to administer care management and coordinate activities for the patients in addition to provide direct patient care assist provider with procedures perform in a technical capacity providing support to the Practice Supervisor and Medical Director to best serve the needs of the patient panel and the specialty care teams. Performs duties in support of the Universitys and the schools mission and in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures. As directed by physician administers vaccinations and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances which may be delegated under State Regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Prepares exam room and sterilize medical instruments and equipment for tests and procedures.
  • Prepares patients for visits including:
    • Putting patient in exam room
    • Taking history and chief complaint
    • Taking vitals including height weight temperature blood pressure and pulse
  • Performs diagnostic tests per physicians standing orders such as ECG Blood work Vision and hearing screening Urine dip PFTs.
  • As directed by physician prepares and/or administers vaccines and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances which may be delegated under State Regulations.
  • Notifies supervisor to orders clinical supplies including injectables and vaccines as needed.
  • Assist physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for analysis.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures and wound care.
  • Assures patients outside testing results are in the chart for physician review with patient.
  • Documents clinical information in chart or EMR system.
  • Provides clinical care in accordance with training and under supervisors direction:
    • Laboratory tests
    • Vision screening
    • Audiograms
    • ECGs
    • Phlebotomy and processing of specimens
    • Allergy Screening
  • Maintains and cleans office medical equipment as required.

Administrative Duties:

  • Serve as an onsite trainer for CMA staff members.
  • Serve as a backup for the Practice Supervisor as needed specific to core duties and responsibilities.
  • Knowledgeable of and initiates emergency procedures.
  • Participates in the departments Performance Improvement activities.
  • Schedule patient appointments and manage patient flow.
  • Maintain accurate and uptodate patient medical records.
  • Answer phone calls and address patient inquiries with a pleasant and helpful demeanor.
  • Handle billing and coding for insurance purposes.
  • Verifies demographics and insurance information and updates in billing system.
  • Verifies patients insurance through insurance lists and/or via insurance websites.
  • Collects appropriate copays from patients.
  • Completes batches as scheduled prepares the deposit for pickup.
  • Retrieves referrals for appropriate visits and enters in to billing system.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the exam rooms and clinic areas.
  • Maintains inventory of front office supplies and notifies supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Signs in and out to the answering service daily as directed.
  • Arranges for patient care services at other facilities including surgeries preadmission testing etc.
  • Calls for preauthorizations and precertifications as required by the patients insurer.
  • Coordinates requests for prescriptions from patients provides chart to physician telephones prescriptions at the direction of the physicians and makes notation in the patient chart with date and signature.
  • Handles incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Pulls patient charts for next day and prepares chart.
  • Opens and closes offices as assigned by supervisor. Activates and deactivates security system as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintains a professional and orderly office appearance.

  • Maintains competence in all applicable office computer systems.
  • Supports and adheres to the University policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new employees as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required.   • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g. AAMA AMT NHA NCCT).
    • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fastpaced environment.
  • Compassionate and patientfocused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • *If in Pediatrics: knowledge of pediatric vaccine knowledge of the vaccine schedule experience of pediatric administration of vaccines and pediatric triage preferred.
  • Familiarity with EPIC

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform medical procedures.
  • Must be able to communicate well with internal and external customers sometimes under stressful circumstances.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a clinical environment.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • May require evening weekend or holiday shifts depending on the clinics hours of operation.

Salary/Benefits:

  • The starting rate is $23.20 per hour (Probationary Rate). After completion of a sixmonth probationary period the employees pay will increase to the Job Rate of $23.81. Depending on experience candidate may be hired at the Job Rate to start.
  • Comprehensive State health and dental benefits state pension extensive accrued time off/paid holidays tuition reimbursement for employee spouse and dependents to attend Rowan University Glassboro. (Tuition reimbursement will apply to undergraduate degrees only for spouse and dependents).
