Job Description

The Exhibit Specialist (ES) is an entry level exhibit maintenance and fabrication position. The ES is responsible for supporting the department in maintaining the functionality and appearance of exhibits and the creation and inventory of the Museums many consumables. The ES also builds smallscale projects and supports exhibit upgrades. This position provides support across the department and works with team members to complete projects on time and to the highest quality.

Hours: Fulltime 40 hours; SundayThursday with additional hours as needed to meet business needs for evenings holidays and special events.

Rate: $20.00$21.35 additional $1/hour for bilingual proficiency in Spanish

Responsibilities

To be successful in this role an individual must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required.   • Exhibit Maintenance & Upgrades: The ES is accountable for maintaining cleaning repairing and improving all existing experiences. The ES will conduct both scheduled and reactive exhibit repairs as well as participate in maintaining the health performance and enhancement of existing exhibits. The daily responsibilities in this area include maintenance of the Exhibits white board used for exhibit communication exhibit cleaning and maintaining consistent radio connectivity with floor staff regarding exhibit issues during open hours.
  • Exhibit Projects: The ES is responsible for supporting exhibit maintenance and refresh projects for the Museums existing exhibits. This responsibility includes but is not limited to the coordination of materials and supplies needed for repairs skillful execution of repairs fabrication and communication with the team and timeline management. Other duties may apply based on project size and scope.
  • Fabrication and Installation: In collaboration with the Director of Exhibits and the Exhibit Operations Manager the ES will perform inhouse fabrication and finishing departmental projects. Working with the team the ES supports planning and timelines for exhibit fabrication and installation ensuring this phase of the process is done in an orderly timely and minimally disruptive manner. This work also includes responsibility for the maintenance of a clean safe shop during the fabrication process.

In addition to these main areas of responsibility the ES will participate in other departmental activities and professional development opportunities including meetings trainings volunteer supervisions etc. All members of the Exhibits department support each others projects and endeavors as called for by scale scope and timeline. The ES supports the Director of Exhibits and the Exhibits department with a positive attitude and strives to make the Museum a worldclass exhibit experience creating a unique community where children and their grownups learn through play.

Requirements
  • 12 years related experience in exhibit or facilities maintenance fabrication or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical or electrical systems repairs
  • Basic knowledge of fabrication processes for a variety of materials (wood metal plastics)
  • Basic knowledge in finishing techniques i.e. routing sanding painting and staining
  • Understanding of personal and shop safety shop maintenance hand and power tool usage
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas with team
  • Work well both independently and in collaborative environments.
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fastpaced work environment
  • Strong commitment to diversity equity access and inclusion and to the Museums mission vision and values
  • At least 18 years of age

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated record of completed creative or maintenance projects
  • Interest in a specialty craft i.e. mechanics electronics woodworking metalworking textiles etc.
  • Basic knowledge in 3D modeling program
  • Basic knowledge in 2D design programs (Photoshop Illustrator InDesign etc.)
  • Spanish speaking and comprehension skills strongly desired

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Frequently move transport position equipment up to 50 pounds across campus for various Museum operations needs. The employee must be comfortable performing job functions outdoors and at height.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time indoors and outdoors (up to 6 hours).
  • Effectively operate a twoway radio to frequently communicate and exchange information with staff
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment

Work Environment:

This position operates in both indoor and outdoor environments where variable temperatures light levels crowds and moderate to very noisy sound levels are common.
